Gold Nanoparticle/Polyphenylene Dendrimer Composite Films: Preparation and Vapor‐Sensing Properties

Abstract: Layer‐by‐layer assembly of gold nanoparticle/dendrimer composite films is described in this article. Crosslinking the nanoparticles through disulfide‐functionalized polyphenylene dendrimers enables well‐controlled film deposition and serves to mechanically reinforce the film material. Chemiresistors based on such films (see Figure) display short response times, high sensitivity to volatile organic compounds, and a desirable low sensitivity to humidity.

“…-0.25 V. The main anodic peak at +0.15 varies linearly with the potential scan rate, indicating that the oxidation of DA is controlled by mass-transport. DA oxidation produces a polymeric melanine structure which involves different steps as described by Serrano et al [34][35][36][37][38][39][40] . First, DA is oxidized to o-dopaminequinone involving two protons and two electrons, followed by partial deprotonation of ethylamine group of the lateral chain.…”

“…Hybrid nanoparticles are of scientific and industrial interest as they can be used for several applications-e.g., paints of high color intensity [60][61][62], electronic devices [63,64], and medical applications [65][66][67]. Hybrid nanoparticles can be prepared by miniemulsion polymerization in a two-stage process [68][69][70]: first, a nanoparticle-in-monomer suspension is emulsified in a continuous phase and then the polymerization of the filled submicron-sized monomer droplets is conducted [55].…”

“…Vossmeyer and co-workers have used dendrimers to produce composite films of dodecylamineprotected AuNPs for the selective detection of ppm levels of chemical vapors in a chemiresistor device. 52 Three different types of dendrimers were used: a hydrophobic, second generation polyphenylene (PPh) dendrimer; a hydrophilic, third generation PAMAM dendrimer; and a fourth generation poly(propylene imine) (PPI) dendrimer. All three dendrimers were functionalized at their periphery with end groups that can attach to the AuNPs by ligand displacement, allowing the assembly of a multiple layer device on top of a lithographically-defined interdigitated electrode structure.…”
