Going Global with Personas

Abstract: The persona method is widely used and commonly described both in scientific literature and in case-based blogs. Most often the descriptions point to a local context with local user groups and it is difficult to find writings on use of the method in an international context and in globally distributed teams. This paper reports from a qualitative study conducted in 2012/13 within 13 Danish companies and points to how design teams apply several different strategies when end-users are distributed worldwide. “…Finally, to broaden the perspective and get companies outside our existing network, Google searches were performed using keywords such as: personas and usability, and the companies found were contacted. We succeded in approaching 13 large, medium-sized and small companies from both the public and private sector, of these 6 have worked with international personas [30]. We are aware of that the self-selected recruiting method creates a bias as it makes it more likely that participants with a positive experience with personas will participate.…”

“…The benefits are twofold: a shared language to discuss and talk about users that are nationally and culturally diverse, and a shared understanding across departments and national borders [30]. The challenges are mostly connected to data collection, as it is described as especially challenging to get enough data and to know when there is enough data.…”

“…Among the benefits of using Personas, Cooper [12] cites: (1) it helps the development team to understand the characteristics of a group of users; (2) it proposes solutions related to the main users" needs; (3) it provides a human face to bring potential users closer to the team. The Persona technique is mainly criticized for being grounded in informal and unscientific data, for being difficult to implement, for not describing real people, and for preventing designers from contacting real users [13]. In summary, the usefulness and ease of use of the technique are often questioned.…”
