GmNAP1 is essential for trichome and leaf epidermal cell development in soybean

Abstract: Key message Map-based cloning revealed that two novel soybean distorted trichome mutants were due to loss function of GmNAP1 gene, which affected the trichome morphology and pavement cell ploidy by regulating actin filament assembly. Abstract Trichomes increase both biotic and abiotic stress resistance in soybean. In this study, Gmdtm1-1 and Gmdtm1-2 mutants with shorter trichomes and bigger epidermal pavement cells were isolated from an ethyl methylsulfonate mutagenized population. Both of them had reduced pl… Show more

“…Recently, it was found that P2, an NCK-associated protein 1 (NAP1) encoding gene, and the homologs of Arabidopsis CPR5 play essential roles in soybean trichome development. Loss of function of these two genes results in abnormal trichome growth (Campbell et al 2016(Campbell et al , 2019Tang et al, 2020). In this study, we focused on the genetics that underlies pubescence density and cloned the genes responsible for the classic loci Pd1, Ps, and P1.…”

“…The genes GmCPR5 and GmNAP1 were reported to be involved in pubescence development (Campbell et al 2016(Campbell et al , 2019Tang et al, 2020). To determine whether Pd1, Ps, and P1 affect GmCPR5 and GmNAP1, we analyzed the transcriptional levels of GmCPR5 and GmNAP1 in DN50 and the Pd1, Ps, and P1 transgenic lines.…”

“…Cell differentiation and morphogenesis must occur at the correct time and place to ensure the normal growth and development of multicellular organisms (Song et al, 2019;Haas et al, 2020;Su et al, 2021). Plant cell differentiation is precisely and intricately regulated to enable these organisms to successfully complete their lifecycles (Glover, 2000;Tang et al, 2020). Root hairs, stomata, trichomes, and salt glands, the major epidermal structures of terrestrial plants, play essential roles in plant growth, development, and adaptation to environmental stress (Yuan et al, 2019b;Li et al, 2021).…”

“…The homologs of GmPGL2 protein were characterized by BLAST tool in Phytozome 1 ; the phylogenetic and microsyntynteny analysis were performed as described previously ( Tang et al, 2020 ). The signal peptide of GmPGL2 protein was analyzed by TargetP2.0 program.…”
