Glycosaminoglycans in human skin

Abstract: SUMMARY Small skin biopsies of thirty‐nine human subjects were assayed for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of glycosaminoglycans. The following results were obtained: Besides the presence of hyaluronic acid and dermatan sulphate, evidence has been presented for the presence of heparan sulphate. The content of glycosaminoglycans was higher in biopsies from healthy individuals than the values reported for post‐mortem human skin. Variation of the concentration of either hyaluronic acid or dermatan sul… Show more

“…Fibroblasts infiltrate at 48–72 h after wounding, leading to granulation formation [ 42 ]. The proliferation is stimulated by PDGF, TGFb, and basic FGF [ 42 ]. Fibroblasts begin to produce many ECM components including collage type I, III, elastin, fibronectin, and GAGs to repair the wounded tissues.…”

“…42 Hyaluronic acid is the major GAG of adult human skin. 43 It is also one of the most abundant components in the ECM of the dermis, more than 50% of total HA in the body is present in skin. 39 Hyaluronic acid is an unbranched polysaccharide composed of repeating disaccharides of d -glucuronic and N-acetyl- d -glucosamine.…”

“…These GAGs substantially contribute to the ability of skin to retain water, thereby preserving its volume and elasticity. [ 13 ] After skin injury, the body quickly initiates the regeneration and repair processes. Any destruction or prolongation at any stage may hinder wound healing.…”
