Glycaemic control and its associated factors in Chinese adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus

Abstract: Most adult patients with T1DM did not achieve the HbA1c target. Identifying determinants for glycaemic control provides us valuable information to improve glycaemic control in these patients. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

“…Other studies vary in the numerical value of the HbA1c that they use to determine good control. However comparisons are able to be made between the average HbA1c of the participants in the present study (8.4%; 68 mmol mol −1 ) and the average disease duration of 16.8 years with other studies in Australia, China and USA, where HbA1c ranged from 8.4% to 8.6% (68–70 mmol mol −1 ) and disease duration was comparable . This emphasises that the difficulty in achieving good glycaemic control was not unique to the participants in the present study.…”

“…The present study was also limited in that it did not measure factors that were investigated in other studies, such as total daily insulin dose, the presence of diabetic autoantibodies and low fasting C‐peptide . Childhood environment, socio‐economic status and engagement in work or study were also not investigated.…”

“…A study from Brazil investigating poor metabolic control and endothelial dysfunction in patients with T1DM determined a positive relationship between age, smoking and dyslipidemia and hypertension [44]. Smoking and dyslipidemia are major risk factors for chronic complications of T1DM [44][45][46][47][48][49]. Another study emphasizes that smoking is one of the most influential factors for atherosclerosis [50].…”

“…Serum levels of autoantibodies against GAD 65, IA‐2, and ZnT8 were detected by radioimmunoassay confirmed by the Islet autoantibody Standardization Program as previously described . The cut‐off for positivity for GADA, IA2A, and ZnT8A was defined as a value above 0.05, 0.02, and 0.011, respectively.…”
