Glucagon-like peptide-1: a potent regulator of food intake in humans

Abstract: Background/Aims-Studies in animals suggest a physiological role for glucagonlike peptide-1-(7-36)-amide (GLP-1) in regulating satiety. The role of GLP-1 in regulating food intake in man has, however, not been investigated. Subjects-Sixteen healthy male subjects were examined in a double blind placebo controlled fashion. Methods-The eVect of graded intravenous doses (0, 0.375, 0.75, and 1.5 pmol/ kg/min) of synthetic human GLP-1 on food intake and feelings of hunger and satiety was tested in healthy volunteers.… Show more

“…9,10 Endogenous release or intraperitoneal GLP-1R agonist delivery triggers a set of responses that include reduced food intake, [11][12][13][14] inhibition of gastric emptying, 9,14 stimulation of glucosedependent insulin secretion 15,16 and tachycardia. [17][18][19][20][21] GLP-1R ligand is also supplied by proglucagon-expressing neurons of the caudal brainstem that project to GLP-1Rs, which are distributed throughout the brain.…”

“…CCK analysis used Phoenix Peptidese RIA (RK-069-04) for CCK octapeptide (CCK [26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33]. The standard RIA protocol was applied but without extraction of the peptides before the assay.…”

“…The potential role of GLP-1 in the regulation of appetite and food intake (Flint et al, 1998;Gutzwiller et al, 1999) and the potential role of GLP-1 and GIP of lipid metabolism (Thomsen et al, 1999) have been investigated recently. A positive correlation between the postprandial GIP response and the subjective satiety sensation was observed in healthy normal weight subjects (Raben et al, 1996).…”
