Glove Comfort vs. Discomfort: Are They Part of a Continuum or Not? A Mulit-Dimensional Scaling Analysis

The perception of comfort and discomfort was investigated using a tactile knife-handle sorting task. Sixteen participants (13 males, 3 females) volunteered to perform the study. Due to the preliminary nature ofthis research the participants were acquaintances ofthe researchers. The participants were randomly assigned to sorting condition of either Comfort or Discomfort. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) was utilized to examine the structural perceptual equivalence of comfort/discomfort conditions on the sorting task. Results indicate that there is little difference in dimensional solutions for comfort versus discomfort, furthermore post hoc inspection ofthe dimensions and stimuli suggest the participants are using handle length (Dim 1), handle circumference (Dim 2), and surface texture (Dim 3) to group the knife handles. Support for a more in-depth study of comfort/discomfort incorporating attribute ratings and implications for designers are discussed.

Methodology for evaluating gloves in relation to the effects on hand performance capabilities: a literature review

The present study was conducted to review the literature on the methods that have been considered appropriate for evaluation of the effects of gloves on different aspects of hand performance, to make recommendations for the testing and assessment of gloves, and to identify where further research is needed to improve the evaluation protocols. Eighty-five papers meeting the criteria for inclusion were reviewed. Many studies show that gloves may have negative effects on manual dexterity, tactile sensitivity, handgrip strength, muscle activity and fatigue and comfort, while further research is needed to determine glove effects on pinch strength, forearm torque strength and range of finger and wrist movements. The review also highlights several methodological issues (including consideration of both task type and duration of glove use by workers, guidance on the selection and allocation of suitable glove(s) for particular tasks/jobs, and glove design features) that need to be considered in future research. Practitioner Summary: The relevant literature on the effects of protective gloves on different aspects of hand performance was reviewed to make recommendations for the testing and assessment of gloves, and to improve evaluation protocols. The review highlights research areas and methodological issues that need to be considered in future research.

The advancement of automated vehicle technology and the resulting shift from active driver control to a more passive role introduce previously unexplored factors that influence drivers' comfort. Examples include the vehicle's level of automation and the driver's preferred driving style, trust in the vehicle, and situation awareness. To structure these as a resource that can support future research, we conducted a comprehensive literature review, identifying 51 works that directly or peripherally address comfort in an automated driving context. Most of these works focus on the physical component of comfort, rooted in vehicle dynamics, while only a few consider a broader concept of comfort necessary to encompass a more expansive set of factors. Based on this review, we propose an integrative framework of 27 comfort influencing factors and their interrelationships. We categorize factors into six groups, encompassing the driving environment, vehicle physical features and automation system, and the user's activity, individual characteristics, and understanding of the automated system. These six groups are organized into the three larger categories of environment, vehicle, and user-related considerations. Patterns that emerge from the framework include that: a) some factors primarily influence physical well-being (such as motion forces), b) some contribute to discomfort (automation failures) while others contribute to comfort (secondary activities), c) some are stable and known before the trip (individual characteristics) while others change over time (environment), and d) comfort or discomfort can lead users to change either the relevant factors (level of automation) or their own behavior (secondary activities).
