Hand Tools Design: Are Biomechanical Criteria the Same as Aesthetic Criteria? a Preliminary Study

Abstract: The perception of comfort and discomfort was investigated using a tactile knife-handle sorting task. Sixteen participants (13 males, 3 females) volunteered to perform the study. Due to the preliminary nature ofthis research the participants were acquaintances ofthe researchers. The participants were randomly assigned to sorting condition of either Comfort or Discomfort. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) was utilized to examine the structural perceptual equivalence of comfort/discomfort conditions on the sorting t… Show more

“…Although more tasks are automated in modern society, there are still a large amount of tasks that require human manipulation. Hand tools remain to utilize such manipulation as a primary interface (Christensen & Bishu, 2000). In terms of hand-tool design, although improvement in functionality was the major criterion in the past, the focus has shifted to spotlight the comfort of usage nowadays (Kuijt-Evers, Bosch, Huysmans, De Looze, & Vink, 2007).…”

“…A traditional method to design a comfortable hand tool is the maximization of fitness between the human hand and the tool (Christensen & Bishu, 2000). In the application of this method, the anthropometrical comprehension of the human hand must be considered first and the anthropometric diversity of the corresponding target population must be reflected in the design.…”
