Global Trends in Pancreatic Cancer Mortality From 1980 Through 2013 and Predictions for 2017

Abstract: Background & Aims Pancreatic cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality and mortality has not decreased in recent years. We sought to determine global trends in pancreatic cancer mortality. Methods We derived data on deaths from pancreatic cancer from the World Health Organization database for 59 countries, from 1980 through 2013. Age-standardized mortalities were computed for persons of all ages and for persons 35–64 years old; for selected countries, they were computed for persons 25–49 years old. Joinp… Show more

“…Pancreatic cancer is the major site not showing favourable trends in recent years; in men the predicted trend reaches a plateau, in women it has still been rising; only in young men some declines were registered [27]. This probably reflects the different trends in smoking, the main recognized risk factor for this neoplasm, in the two sexes.…”

“…1 Although the incidence of pancreatic cancer has increased recently, the survival rate has not improved significantly. 2 Surgical resection is the only curative treatment for pancreatic cancer, but the surgical excision rate is less than 20% due to poor early diagnosis. 3 Therefore, a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms governing pancreatic cancer carcinogenesis is required for the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer.…”

“…In Europe, while mortality rates for all cancers fall, rising PC death rates have been observed [4,5] . This first observation was more evident among women in subsequent reports [6,7] . A recent publication estimated that, by 2017, there will be more deaths from PC than breast cancer in the EU [8] .…”
