Global transcriptome analysis of Huperzia serrata and identification of critical genes involved in the biosynthesis of huperzine A

Abstract: Background Huperzia serrata (H. serrata) is an economically important traditional Chinese herb with the notably medicinal value. As a representative member of the Lycopodiaceae family, the H. serrata produces various types of effectively bioactive lycopodium alkaloids, especially the huperzine A (HupA) which is a promising drug for Alzheimer’s disease. Despite their medicinal importance, the public genomic and transcriptomic resources are very limited and the biosynthesis of HupA is largely unknown. Previous s… Show more

“…The MS fragmentation pattern of hupA (Fig. S2A) in our study is in agreement with reference studies (Cuthbertson et al, 2012;Wang et al, 2004;Yang et al, 2017), showing a protonated molecular ion at m/z 243.1424 and a sodium adduct ion at 265.1354. Table 2.…”

“…Recently, the development of RNA-sequencing (RNA-Seq) provided an opportunity for detailed transcriptomic studies, even in species without a reference genome [ 25 ]. De novo transcriptome assembly has been widely applied to investigate and identify the critical genes involved in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites in medicinal and aromatic plants, such as Artemisia annua [ 26 ], Mentha spicate [ 27 ], Cinnamomum camphora [ 28 ] , Salvia miltiorrhiza [ 29 ], Lindera glauca [ 30 ] and Huperzia serrata [ 31 ].…”
