Global Positioning System Analysis of Physical Demands in Small and Large-Sided Games with Floaters and Official Matches in the Process of Return to Play in High Level Soccer Players

Abstract: The aim of this study was twofold: (i) to analyze the physical demands in the return to play (RTP) process of high-level soccer players in the role of floater in different soccer sided games (SGs) formats (i.e., 4vs4 + 2 and 8vs8 + 1); and (ii) to analyze the differences in physical demands encountered by regular and floater players among the SGs formats and official matches by means of global positioning system technology (GPS APEX pod, North Ireland) was used. Twenty-six highly trained, male soccer players (… Show more

“…Taking into account that high-speed sprint training is considered a key factor for hamstring injury prevention [39], these drills could also be used as preventive and specific exercises. Likewise, taking into account that matches have reported greater peak speeds than those achieved in SSGs [20,21], transition games could be considered a new and useful tool to train this variable during specific counter-attack actions. SSG CA also showed greater distance > 14 km • h − 1 than LSG, so when coaches need to train counter-attacks with previous possession, these kinds of SSGs may be used.…”

“…The dimensions of the pitch were the same as in the transition games (60 × 40 m). The LSG set-up has been previously described in the literature [21]. During this modified game 2 teams of 9 players with goalkeepers (9vs9 + GK) were involved.…”

“…40 During matches, each player wore a tight vest with the GPS unit on the back of their upper body between scapula as described by the manufacturer. The microsensor devices were activated 15 min prior to the start of each match, in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations and previous research, 41 with this period of time being excluded from analyses. To minimize inter-devices error, 40 each player used the same GPS unit during the entire season.…”
