Global patterns of non‐Hodgkin lymphoma in 2020

Abstract: We evaluated the global patterns of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in 2020 using the estimates of NHL incidence and mortality in 185 countries that are part of the GLO-BOCAN 2020 database, developed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). As well as new cases and deaths of NHL, corresponding age-standardized (world) rates (ASR) of incidence and mortality per 100 000 person-years were derived by country and world region. In 2020, an estimated 544 000 new cases of NHL were diagnosed worldwide, and… Show more

“…Certain racial disparities may be explained by other variables such as health-related behaviors, social support, and genetic vulnerability ( 41 ).For NHL, there has been progress in narrowing the survival gap between non-Hispanic white patients and ethnic minorities ( 42 ). Similarly, data on global socio-economic parameters of NHL showed large variations and higher mortality in low- and middle-income countries probably related to prevalence and underlying risk factors as well as access to medical care ( 43 ). Inequalities in socioeconomic level and health care access may influence the efficacy of therapy, and such disparities may impact NHL diagnoses ( 44 ).…”

“…Non‐Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a prevalent and potentially life‐threatening cancer worldwide which may have a 34% increase in incidence and a 31% increase in mortality from 2020 to 2040 according to newly updated reports (Mafra et al, 2022). The majority of NHLs arise from B cells, and the most common and aggressive subtype is diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma (DLBCL) (Sehn & Salles, 2021).…”

“…[12][13][14] These studies were likely to neglect examination of age-based disease distribution, analysis of subtle age trends at country level, and exploration of associated lifestyle and metabolic risk factors. [15][16][17] This study aims to tackle the existing knowledge gap by (1) analyzing global NHL incidence and mortality rates based on latest available data, focused on varied subgroups; (2) investigating relationships between common lifestyle and metabolic risk factors with the disease burden of NHL; and (3) examining temporal trends in NHL incidence and mortality by age, gender, and geographical location; (4) providing evidence that facilitates policy developments aimed at reducing burden of NHL in diverse geographical contexts.…”

“…Although prior studies have investigated epidemiological trends of NHL, they often relied on outdated data or narrowed focus on specific countries 12–14 . These studies were likely to neglect examination of age‐based disease distribution, analysis of subtle age trends at country level, and exploration of associated lifestyle and metabolic risk factors 15–17 …”
