Global Impact of Cloud Longwave Scattering in an Atmosphere‐Only General Circulation Model Simulation

Abstract: Most general circulation models (GCMs) neglect cloud longwave scattering in pursuit of computational efficiency. This study implements the 2‐/4‐stream (2/4S) method, a relatively fast cloud longwave scattering treatment, in Community Atmospheric Model version 5 (CAM5) to analyze the impact of cloud longwave scattering on the large‐scale circulation. Two 45‐years‐long integrations are performed with prescribed sea surface temperature (SST). In the experiment run, cloud longwave scattering is included using the … Show more

“…In the LW, MC6 has a smaller ω but a larger g than THM. The LW CRE is determined by both cloud LW absorption and scattering (Gu et al., 2021; Kuo et al., 2017; Ren, Yang, Schumacher, et al., 2020; Tang et al., 2018). As shown in Ren et al.…”

“…The LW CRE is determined by both cloud LW absorption and scattering (Gu et al, 2021;Kuo et al, 2017;Ren, Yang, Schumacher, et al, 2020;Tang et al, 2018). As shown in Ren et al (2021), given the same cloud description, the MC6 radiation scheme also yields a weaker LW CRE than the THM radiation scheme.…”

“…The RRTMG computations in longwave bands explicitly consider cloud multiple scattering effects. Previous studies (e.g., Gu et al., 2021; Kuo et al., 2017) have shown the significance of accounting for cloud multiple scattering in longwave radiative flux computations. The 2/4‐stream approximation method (Fu et al., 1997; Kuo et al., 2020; Toon et al., 1989) is incorporated into the RRTMG_LW runs to account for cloud multiple scattering.…”

“…As in previous studies (Chen et al., 2019, 2020; Gu et al., 2021; Huang et al., 2018), we chose a relatively coarse atmospheric horizontal resolution of 1.9° latitude by 2.5° longitude for computational efficiency. Each run simulates the 35‐year period of monthly mean from 1980 to 2014, and the last 30 years of simulations (1985–2014) are analyzed, discarding the first 5 years as a model spin‐up.…”
