The Dayak indigenous community has belief and confidence in taking a stance and taking actions towards a situation and circumstances that affect their social life. This belief is based on their customs and traditions passed down from generation to generation until now. The Dayak traditional custom is a form of social resilience for the community on the border to anticipate the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic, which has become a problem in all aspects of community lives. Despite facing various issues and difficulties in dealing with the pandemic, the indigenous Dayak community in Indonesia has managed to survive and resolve these problems. In dealing with the social impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic, the Salako Dayak indigenous community on the Indonesia‐Malaysia border carried out a traditional ritual called Besamsam . The indigenous Salako Dayak community believes this ritual boosts the social and psychological resilience of the Salako Dayak indigenous community. The research findings showed that the Besamsam ritual had changed people's beliefs about lifestyle, behaviour and perceptions in dealing with the COVID‐19 pandemic. The Besamsam ritual can specifically affect the community's personalities, attitudes and actions towards the spread of COVID‐19. Indigenous peoples have become easier to organize, dynamic, empowered, resilient, motivated to meet their needs, and capable of facing various challenges and social problems during and after the COVID‐19 pandemic. These findings prove that indigenous communities psychologically have strong confidence in their customary beliefs rather than cautionary advice from outside their community. The social impact of the Besamsam custom can serve as a model of awareness and a driving force for indigenous peoples' elements to work cooperatively to break the chain of COVID‐19 spread.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan fenomena akseptasi modernitas yang terjadi di Nyarumkop, Kota Singkawang. Ketika tradisi Dayak dipertemukan dengan tradisi Gereja Katolik, lantas apakah kedua tradisi itu saling mempengaruhi? Ataukah terjadi menyesuai diri? Atau justru saling “memberi” dan “menerima”? Menjawab pertanyaan masalah ini, telah dilakukan penelitian terhadap orang Dayak di Kampung Nyarumkop. Kampung Nyarumkop sebagai pusat persekolahan misi Gereja Katolik, tentu merepresentasikan modernitas. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan antropologi budaya dengan prosedur etnografis. Selama 6 bulan kami melakukan observasi, wawancara mendalam, dan studi literatur, terhadap fenomena modernitas masyarakat desa di Kampung Nyarumkop. Penelitian ini mengungkap feomena akseptasi modernitas pada masyarakat desa, terjadi karena terdapatnya domain psikologi, domain sosial dan domain budaya yang memiliki aspek keterbukaan terhadap hal-hal baru di luar diri mereka. Keterbukaan pada tiga domain ini mendorong etnis Dayak di Kampung Nyarumkop dalam menerima kehadiran Tradisi Barat melalui misionaris Gereja Katolik. Modernitas yang terjadi pada masyarakat pedesaan tampak dalam gejala global village di kampung Nyarumkop. Namun demikian, orang-orang Dayak tersebut tidak bisa secara total melepaskan diri dari ikatan tradisinya, sehingga terjadi juga gejala detradisionalisasi sebagai gejala modernitas. This study aims to describe the phenomenon of acceptance of modernity that occurs in Nyarumkop, Singkawang City. When the Dayak tradition is met with the tradition of the Catholic Church, then do the two traditions influence each other? Or does it happen accordingly? Or do they “give” and “receive”? Answering this research question, we have conducted research on the Dayak people in Nyarumkop Village. Nyarumkop village as the center of the Catholic Church's mission schooling certainly represents modernity. This study uses a cultural anthropological approach with ethnographic procedures. For 6 months we conducted observations, in-depth interviews, and literature studies, on the phenomenon of the modernity of rural communities in Nyarumkop village. This study reveals the phenomenon of acceptance of modernity in rural communities, occurs because of the psychological domain, social domain and cultural domain that have aspects of openness to new things outside of themselves. Openness to these three domains encourages the Dayak ethnic group in Nyarumkop Village to accept the presence of Western Tradition through Catholic Church missionaries. Modernity that occurs in rural communities can be seen in the global village phenomenon in Nyarumkop village. However, the Dayak people cannot totally break away from their traditional ties, so there is also a symptom of detraditionalization as a symptom of modernity.

This study aimed to investigate teaching character education values using the RECE (reflective, engage, collaborative, and elaborative) model. In Indonesia, Pancasila and Citizenship Education Subjects are mandatory programs that must be incorporated into each activity in schools, either through particular programs or the subjects taught. The civic education module taught in schools has a wider responsibility to teach character education. Currently, this module focuses on theory and encourages students to learn about character. Although teachers can use a wide variety of learning models for teaching character, this study uses a qualitative and descriptive approach focused on exploring the RECE teaching model. This method enables researchers to go to classrooms and observe how teachers impart character education. In total, 15 respondents participated in this study. Of these, three were citizenship education teachers, one was a vice-principal, one was a school principal, and ten were senior high school students in Jakarta. To obtain data, in-depth interviews were used along with 135-min long focus group discussions with all participants. The data were then analyzed using the content analysis method and nVivo software. The results showed that students can reflect, elaborate, collaborate, and communicate well when learning character education in school. The four stages of teaching character education were successful in integrating values in the classroom. This study has implications for the teachers who impart character education.
