Lamiaceae contains many species known for their aromatic properties that are produced by the production of essential oils in glandular trichomes. Hyptis is one of the most common genera of Lamiaceae in the Brazilian fl ora, and includes several species with medicinal value. However, studies on the morphology and functioning of their glandular trichomes are lacking. We analyzed the morphology, histochemistry and ultrastructure of the glandular trichomes in leaves of H. villosa, emphasizing the diff erential distribution of actin fi laments and microtubules in cells secreting hydrophilic and lipophilic compounds. Four morphotypes of glandular trichomes were identifi ed. Total lipid, terpenes, alkaloids, phenolic compounds, proteins and polysaccharides were histochemically detected in all morphotyes. Th is evidences the mixed nature of the secretions of this species, although there are diff erences in the prevalence of lipophilic and hydrophilic components among the glandular morphotypes and among the cells of the same trichome. Th e actin microfi laments are more abundant in cells that secrete mainly hydrophilic compounds, and microtubules predominate in cells that secrete lipophilic compounds. Our results corroborate the correlation between the glandular morphotype and the composition of the secretion produced, with a diff erential distribution of the cytoskeletal elements according to the prevalence of either hydrophilic or lipophilic substances.

A presença de substâncias lipofílicas na mucilagem é geralmente associada com a proteção contra herbívoros e patógenos além de impermeabilização da superfície de órgãos jovens (Werker & Fahn 1981;Ascensão et al 1995;Corsi & Bottega 1999). ABSTRACT(Mucilage-secreting structures of Hibiscus pernambucensis Arruda (Malvaceae): distribution, morphoanatomical and histochemical characterization). This work studied the mucilage-secreting structures of Hibiscus pernambucensis using light and scanning electron microscopy. Known as guaxima-do-mangue, algodão-do-brejo and embira-do-mangue, this species is a native shrub that occurs in mangrove and restinga along the Brazilian coast, and is important in the production of textile fibers and cellulose, provides abundant mucilage that is used medicinally like other Malvaceae species, and has tannins. The results of this work found colleters, pearl glands, long-stalked secretory trichomes, ducts, cavities and idioblasts. The colleters occur on the shoot apices, stipules, leaf primordia, leaves, young sepals and petals. The pearl glands are present in the adaxial and abaxial surface of the leaf primordia. The ducts and the cavities occur in the vegetative and reproductive shoot apices. The idioblasts occur in the roots, both in primary and secondary stages of development, and in the leaf mesophyll. The secretion of the different secretory structures is made predominantly of acids and neutral polysaccharides, proteins, lipids and phenolic substances. The presence of external and internal mucilage-secreting structures in all plant organs, at different stages of development, represents an important adaptive mechanism to restinga and mangrove environments.

1,8‐Cineole is the main volatile produced by Thymus albicans Hoffmanns. & Link 1,8‐cineole chemotype. To understand the contribution of distinct plant organs to the high 1,8‐cineole production, trichome morphology and density, as well as emitted volatiles and transcriptional expression of the 1,8‐cineole synthase (CIN) gene were determined separately for T. albicans leaves, bracts, calyx, corolla and inflorescences. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and stereoscope microscopy observations showed the highest peltate trichome density in leaves and bracts, significantly distinct from calyx and corolla. T. albicans volatiles were collected by solid phase micro extraction (SPME) and analyzed by gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and by GC for component identification and quantification, respectively. Of the 23 components identified, 1,8‐cineole was the dominant volatile (57–93 %) in all T. albicans plant organs. The relative amounts of emitted volatiles clearly separated vegetative from reproductive organs. Gene expression of CIN was assigned to all organs analyzed and was consistent with the relatively high emission of 1,8‐cineole in leaves and bracts. Further studies will be required to analyze monoterpenoid biosynthesis by each type of glandular trichome.
