Gingival Blood Glucose Estimation With Reagent Test Strips: A Method to Detect Diabetes in a Periodontal Population

Abstract: The use of reagent strips for the estimation of gingival blood glucose seemed to be a suitable option for the screening of an unsuspecting periodontal population for the presence of diabetes; however, additional studies in a larger population are needed to confirm their suitability.

“…Among 356 patients with no known history of diabetes who visited an outpatient periodontal clinic in India, diabetes was found in 19.1% of the patients. 15 In practice, physicians who detect an abnormal test result for the presence of chronic disease are inclined to provide medication to their patients. The thresholds upon which primary care physicians determine mediation treatment, particularly for diabetes and hypertension, have been lowered since the early 1990s, and newer guidelines encourage the treatment of prediabetes and prehypertension.…”

“…In our study, the correlation between oral health care and medical health care registrations based on blood pressure and plasma glucose indicates that it may be appropriate for dental professionals to perform opportunistic medical screening and refer risk patients to the medical care system doi: 10.7243/2052-4358-1-5 before complications occur. In order to identify medical risk patients in dental settings on the basis of high blood pressure, a suggestion may be to examine middle-aged men and elderly patients of both sexes who exhibit radiographic markers for marginal alveolar bone loss.…”
