Giant pulmonary hamartoma

Abstract: Pulmonary hamartomas are usually an incidental finding and range in size from 1 cm to 8 cm in diameter in various series. We report a case of a massive pulmonary hamartoma (size 25.5 × 17.5 × 6.5 cm and weighing 1134 g) in a 61 year old male who presented with a short history of breathlessness. The tumour was arising from the medial border of the right lung and occupying most of the right chest extending in to the anterior mediastinum. The tumour was compressing the right lung and there was no evidence of infi… Show more

“…The diameter is usually , 6 cm, 1 , 3 but they have been reported as large as 25.5 cm. 4 The mass in this patient had a heterogenous appearance with a radiographically apparent focus of calcifi cation. Calcifi cation has been reported to occur in 3% to 32% of hamartoma cases but tends to have a punctate or "popcornlike" pattern.…”

“…1 There are some reports of giant symptomatic hamartomas. 2,3 Hamartomas, the third most common solitary pulmonary nodule following granuloma and carcinoma, usually account for 6%-8% of localized parenchymal masses treated by thoracotomy. 4 Although evaluation of the specifi c morphological features (e.g., size, margins, contour, internal characteristics) of a solitary pulmonary nodule with conventional imaging techniques can help us differentiate pulmonary hamartoma from others (e.g., neoplastic, infl ammatory, vascular, and congenital causes), initial evaluation often results in nonspecifi c fi ndings, and the nodules are classifi ed as indeterminate.…”

“…We found a white nodule and thought it was composed of chondroid material because of its color and hardness; we enucleated it with a forceps for biopsy. It was elastic and hard, and it measured 16 × 16 × 12 mm 3 . The frozen section pathological diagnosis during operation was chondroid hamartoma with no evidence of malignancy.…”

“…Radiologiquement, il réalise une opacité arrondie de petite taille, en général inférieure à 2,5 cm. La taille de ces lésions varie de 1 à 8 cm, et il n'y a eu que deux rapports publiés d'un hamartome plus de trois fois la taille des données publiées antérieurement [10,11].…”
