Giant Nonlinear Circular Dichroism from High Q‐Factor Asymmetric Lithium Niobate Metasurfaces

Abstract: Lithium niobate (LN) is a good nonlinear material with a large second-order nonlinear polarization coefficient and low optical loss in the UV to mid-infrared spectral regions. By combining bound states in the continuum (BICs) with chirality, a high conversion efficiency and strong second-harmonic circular dichroism (SHG-CD) can be achieved. The simulated results show that the SHG conversion efficiency can reach 1.35 × 10 −2 % for a peak-pump intensity of ≈5.3 GW cm −2 in the near-infrared, and the SHG-CD can r… Show more

“…To further enhance the SHG conversion efficiency, it is possible to utilize high Q -factor modes based on the concept of bound state in the continuum (BIC). , This possibility has been theoretically explored, suggesting that a strong SHG enhancement can be achieved by controlling the coupling to free-space radiation through symmetry breaking and excitation of quasi-BIC modes ,, (see rows 6–8 in Table ). In particular, the concept of etchless LiNbO 3 metasurfaces, namely, periodic structures realized onto otherwise unstructured films of LiNbO 3 , has been introduced ,, to avoid the complex etching process of LiNbO 3 , while granting access to highly delocalized resonances with high Q -factors.…”

“…These include pairs of ellipse dimers with a small outof-plane distance, [33] tilted etch twisted dimers, [34] asymmetric high aspect ratio silicon disk arrays, [35] and bilayer twisted dimers metasurfaces. [36,37] Similar mechanisms were employed to create chiral BICs in plasmonic platforms supporting surface lattice [33][34][35][36]38] The inserted images show the corresponding metasurface configurations. b) The counterparts in this work.…”
