Giant Fecaloma Leading to Bilateral Ureterohydronephrosis

Abstract: Symptomatic compression of the lower urinary tract because of constipation-induced fecal impactions is a rare condition. It is particularly seen in the elderly and in patients with limited mobilization and chronic dehydration caused by inadequate fluid intake. Among the reasons that can cause urinary tract obstruction, fecal impactions mimicking a pelvic mass effect should also be considered. In this study, we presented two cases of giant fecaloma leading to bilateral ureterohydronephrosis.

“…Significant complications may occur in the gastrointestinal system due to fecaloma formation. Due to the local pressurizing effect of fecaloma (pelvic mass effect), severe morbidity such as urinary system obstruction and rupture of colon or bladder may occur, and sometimes they can be mortal [1]. Although conservative methods such as the use of enemas, laxatives, and rectal evacuation are among the treatment options to relieve the fecal effect, surgical intervention is another option when these methods fail [2].…”

“…[8][9][10]13 Fecaloma may cause various complications such as hydronephrosis, compressive rupture of the urinary bladder, and rectal bleeding, as well as stercoral perforation and fecal peritonitis in more severe cases. 3,7,17,18 In the four reported cases of cecal impaction in dogs, three dogs without fatal complications showed a good prognosis after typhlectomy, with no recurrence over a follow-up period of 1 year. [8][9][10] However, one dog with visceral myopathy exhibited chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction.…”
