Giant central neurocytoma with tetraventricular and extra-axial extension

Abstract: The central neurocytoma is a recently recognized benign intraventricular tumour of young adults. The authors report a unique case of a panventricular neurocytoma with extension to the interpeduncular and prepontique cisterns which developed in a 35-year-old woman with a 7-year history of headaches and amenorrhea. They review the different pathological and topographical patterns of previously published neurocytomas and discuss the histogenesis of this rare tumour.

“…Two exceptional cases with massive tetraventricular extension have been reported. 26,37 No examples of central neurocytoma arising from and confined to the fourth ventricle have been reported. Although several instances of intraparenchymal neurocytomas have been described, the relationship of these tumors to intraventricular neurocytomas and other low grade entities, such as dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors, is uncertain and requires further study.…”

“…[ 6 7 8 9 ] Tetraventricular involvement of the disease is extremely rare and to our knowledge only two cases were reported in the literature. [ 10 11 ] This is the third tetraventricular CN case with classical neuroimaging and histopathological findings including DWI. On DWI sequence, the tumor shows heterogeneous high signal intensity to the brain with a corresponding low ADC value consisted with restricted diffusion.…”

“…[ 2 ] Holo ventricular involvement with extra ventricular extension of a central neurocytoma as noted in the present case is extremely rare and has been earlier described only once. [ 3 ]…”

“…[ 5 ] Roche et al ., described a giant pan ventricular neurocytoma with extension to the interpeduncular and prepontine cisterns. [ 3 ] The clinical significance of such pan ventricular extension remains an enigma.…”
