Cereus jamacaru is a widespread Cactaceae of northeast Brazil, largely used as cattle food, and as ornamental and medicinal plant. Despite its distinguished importance, until now, there has been little information about the physiological aspects involved on its germination. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of light and temperature interaction on the seed germination and seedling establishment of this plant. The evaluated variables were germination percentage at 7 (% G7) and at 14 days after imbibition (% G14), germination average time index (GSI), germination average time (GAT), germination accumulated frequency (GAF), seedling dry mass and height. The highest % G14 and GSI were at 25 ºC in white light, whereas the highest GAT values were in darkness for all evaluated temperatures. On the other hand, % G14, GSI and GAF had the lowest values in darkness.Seeds germinated even in darkness, being however stimulated by the presence of light. The combination of white light and temperature of 25 or 30 °C is the most appropriate condition for seed germination tests.

Temperature and substrate for germination of Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata (Haw.) Moran)Schlumbergera truncata is a cacti of epiphytic habit known popularly as Christmas Cactus, Thanksgiving Cactus or Crab Cactus, Zygocactus. It is an ornamental plant cultivated in vases and highly appreciated for the beauty of their flowers. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of temperature and of substrate on seed germination of S. truncata. The substrates used in the experiment included: blotting paper, sand of medium granulation, charred rice peel and triturated cane pulp. The tested temperatures were 20, 25 and 30 o C. The analyzed variables were: germination percentage, index of germination speed and average germination time. The highest germination percentages were recorded at 20 o C and 25 o C for paper, sand and charred rice peel. Charred rice peel showed the highest index of germination speed and the lowest average germination time. In conclusion, temperature at 20 o C and the substrate charred rice peel showed the best results for seed germination of S. truncata and cane pulp was not a suitable substrate for the germination of the species. RESUMO -A Amburana cearensis (Allemão) A.C. Smith é uma espécie nativa da Região Nordeste, que vem sendo progressivamente explorada na movelaria fina, na perfumaria e na medicina, fazendo-se necessários estudos que auxiliem em sua preservação. Este trabalho teve como objetivo definir substratos e temperaturas para a condução de testes de germinação e vigor com sementes de A. cearensis. O experimento foi realizado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com os tratamentos distribuídos em esquema fatorial 5 x 5, com os fatores temperaturas (20, 25, 30, 35 ºC constantes e 20-30 ºC alternadas) e substratos (rolo de papel Germitest, areia, vermiculita, bioplant ® e plantmax ® ), em quatro repetições de 25 sementes. Foram analisadas as seguintes características: porcentagem e velocidade de germinação, comprimento e massa seca de plântulas (raiz e parte aérea). A temperatura de 35 ºC mostrou-se mais adequada para a condução dos testes de germinação e vigor, independentemente do substrato utilizado. Os substratos areia e vermiculita foram os mais apropriados para avaliação da qualidade fisiológica das sementes.Palavras-chave: Cumaru-de-cheiro, Florestal e Medicinal.
