Knowledge of the effects of seed burial depth and the presence of straw on the soil surface on weed seedling emergence provides useful information for the development of weed management tactics. Buttonweed (Borreria densiflora DC.) is a troublesome weed that occurs in large infestations in soybean and sugarcane crops from north-central Brazil. This study investigated buttonweed emergence at different seed burial depths and straw amounts present on the soil surface. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse conditions, under a factorial design between four seed burial depths and four amounts of surface straw. Percent seedling emergence and fresh biomass (g) were evaluated at twenty-five days after installation (DAI). Greater buttonweed emergence occurred in seeds that were placed on the soil surface either without surface straw or with up to 1,000 kg ha −1 of straw on the soil surface. With 4,000 kg ha −1 of surface straw, buttonweed emergence was prevented when seeds were placed at a depth of 0.5 cm or deeper in the soil. These data indicated emergence of this weed species was greater at depths near the soil surface and in soils with the least amounts of surface straw. Information generated in this study provides a starting point for the development of knowledge for understanding the biology of buttonweed emergence and its population dynamics. Such information may be directly transmitted to growers and lays the groundwork for an integrated management approach for this weed species.

-The weed Borreria densiflora is a management issue in soybean and sugarcane crops from North and Northeastern Brazil. Knowledge upon chemical control of B. densiflora contributes to the integrated management of this weed species, especially when active ingredient options become reduced due to the selection of herbicide resistant or tolerant weed species. Experiments in pre-and post-emergence of B. densiflora were conducted in greenhouse, in a randomized block design and four replications. In pre-emergence, the doseresponse curve methodology was used and 7 herbicides were tested. In post-emergence, 9 herbicides at the recommended rate and 4 herbicide mixtures were tested. For pre and post-emergence conditions, evaluations were conducted at 60 and 21 days after treatment (DAT), respectively, and the variables analyzed were weed control and dry weight (%). The results showed options of pre-emergent herbicides that can be used for controlling B. densiflora, especially in sugarcane, where chemical weed control is mainly based on preemergent applications. In the current glyphosate resistance scenario, one should consider the use of pre-emergent herbicides within an integrated management of B. densiflora. For satisfactory post-emergence control, B. densiflora plants should be sprayed at the phenological stage of up to three pairs of leaves. Herbicide mixtures have been and will continue to be an important tool in chemical weed management, broadening the spectrum of weed control, while diversifying herbicide mechanisms of action, which helps to prevent or delay the appearance of herbicide resistance.Keywords: vassourinha-de-botão, chemical control, dose-response, herbicide mixtures, integrated weed management. RESUMOO conhecimento científico sobre a biologia de plantas daninhas contribui para a implantação de adequadas estratégias de manejo e controle. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar a germinação de sementes de ervaquente (Spermacoce latifolia Aubl.), importante planta infestante em áreas de reflorestamento. As sementes foram submetidas à superação de dormência, em que foram avaliados a escarificação mecânica, tratamento químico (H 2 SO 4 e KNO 3 ) e térmico, além da testemunha. Foram avaliados ainda a temperatura (10, 15, 20, 25, 30 e 35°C), filtros de luz (ausência, vermelha, verde, amarela, vermelha distante, azul, laranja e transparente) e disponibilidade de água (0,0, -0,2, -0,4, -0,6, -0,8 e -1,0 MPa) na germinação e vigor das sementes. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições, sendo a parcela experimental constituída por caixas plásticas tipo gerbox, com 50 sementes. A escarificação mecânica (lixa) foi o método que proporcionou melhor quebra de dormência, indicando que as sementes de S. latifolia possuem impermeabilidade do tegumento à água. As sementes apresentaram maiores percentagens de germinação em condições de leve restrição hídrica (-0,2 MPa) e a temperatura ótima foi de 25°C. A luz de cor azul reduziu a porcentagem de germinação. Dormancy break and influence of environmental factors on the germination of Spermacoce latifolia seeds ABSTRACTUnderstanding basic information on weed biology contributes to the implementation of appropriate management and control strategies. Thus, this work was developed to evaluate the germination of Spermacoce latifolia Aubl. seeds, an important weed in reforestation areas. The seeds were subjected to dormancy break treatments, in which the mechanical scarification, chemical treatment (H2SO 4 and KNO 3 ), heat treatment, and control, were evaluated. Three more tests were done determinate the effects of temperature (10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C), light filters (absence of light and red, green, yellow, distant red, blue, orange and clear light) and water availability (0.0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6, -0.8 and -1.0 MPa) on the seeds germination and vigor. The treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design with four replications, and the experimental plot was constituted by gerbox plastic boxes with 50 seeds. The mechanical scarification (sanding) provided the best dormancy break, indicating that Spermacoce latifolia seeds have tegument water impermeability. The seeds showed higher germination percentage under conditions of mild water stress (-0.2 MPa) and the optimal temperature was 25°C. The blue light reduced seed germination.
