The Academy operates as a private, non-profit institution charged with providing advice to agencies of the federal government on matters of science and technology. ILAR provides information on the selection, care, and use of biologicals and animals used in research, testing, and education. ILAR's best known report is the Guide for the Care and Use of Labora..orv Animals (Guide), of which the 6th revision was initiated during this grant year. Oversight for the work of ILAR is provided by ILAR Council, a standing committee of 13 scientists, veterinarians, and ethicists, which meets three times each year to review all aspects of ILAR's program and develop new initiatives. ILAR has two types of programs:core and special projects. This grant supports the core program, consisting of the meetings and activities of Council and those of staff in the publishing of ILAR News, in the activities of the Animal Models and Genetic Stocks Information Program, and International Activities. In this study, between March 2018 and December 2020 27 dogs brought to İzmir Pamuk Veterinary Therapy Center were evaluated for cataracts.. All dogs brought in as a result of the examination were diagnosed with cataracts. It was determined that the dogs had 12 different breeds (Labrador Retriever, Pug, Spaniel Cocker, Yorkshire Terrier, Pekingese Terrier, mix-breed, Shih Tzu, Miniature Schnauzer, Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd Dog, Siberian Husky, Boxer). 14 of the cases were male and 13 were female. The average age of the general population was 8.25.Of the dogs diagnosed with cataracts, 21 were neutered and 6 were not. In the information about the feeding of dogs, it was noted that 9 of them were fed with home meals, 18 of them were fed with ready-made food, their ages ranged between 5 and 12. Cataract was diagnosed in 15 dogs bilaterally and 12 dogs unilateral. While no insipient cataracts were observed in male dogs, more mature cataracts were detected in female dogs. Among those with bilateral cataracts, mature and hypermature ones were operated.

RESUMOForam utilizados 20 cães de raças e idades variadas, machos e fêmeas, portadores de catarata e não diabéticos, os quais foram submetidos ao exame oftálmico. Posteriormente, realizaram-se mensurações oculares empregando-se um ecobiômetro ultra-sônico (ultra-sonografia modo-A) para o cálculo do poder dióptrico da lente intra-ocular por meio da fórmula SRK/T. O comprimento axial médio foi de 19,94±1,12mm. Todos os animais foram submetidos à facoemulsificação extracapsular. A lente calculada foi implantada no transoperatório da cirurgia de catarata, obtendo-se média de 37,33±3,05D. A avaliação pós-cirúrgica do erro refracional aos 60 dias de pós-operatório, pela retinoscopia, com a utilização da esquiascopia, foi de 5,57±1,59D. A fórmula SRK/T não ofereceu bons resultados.
