Geothermal Energy as an Alternative to Reduce Atmospheric Emissions and Provide Green Energy

Abstract: Recently, there has been a worldwide rise of concern regarding the increasing emissions of air pollutants and global climate change. In contrast, there are also concerns about the growing energy consumption and how to guarantee its supply. Renewable energies can help minimize the use of fossil fuels, this being a high priority on the political agenda of countries around the world. Within renewable energies, geothermal energy is one of the oldest and most well-known sources of energy to generate electricity. It… Show more

“…The environmental impact of geothermal energy is generally less than other clean energies, but emissions of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide must be monitored. As geothermal energy expands, it is necessary to standardize compliance with environmental regulations and create strategies for sustainable development [70]. Trunov et al, presented an interesting application of geothermal energy on heating and cooling livestock premises.…”

“…Despite that, geothermal energy is an alternative source of electricity, it is sometimes considered as a renewable energy (when extraction does not exceed recharge) [14], a sustainable energy (when production rates are maintained for more than 40 years) [15], and a clean energy (when CO 2 concentrations emitted are below the local limits) [16]. However, it can cause negative impacts on the environment, which sometimes trigger social conflicts.…”

“…Standardizing compliance with environmental regulations and creating sustainable development strategies are necessary as geothermal energy expands [85]. The Geothermal Energy Impact Estimator (GEIE) software allows users to quantify the environmental impacts of existing or future plants using two parametric models [86].…”
