“…Three lines of evidence can be used to recognize ophiolitic detritus in sedimentary rocks: (1) serpentinite fragments (Arai and Okada 1991;von Eynatten 2003), (2) anomalously high concentrations of Cr and Ni (Hiscott 1984;Garver and Scott 1995;Garver et al 1996;Totten et al 2000 and references therein), and (3) the oc- currence of Cr-spinels (Stevens 1970;Dick and Bullen 1984;Cookenboo et al 1997;Ganssloser 1999;Hisada et al 1999;Lee 1999).…”

“…Two main types are illustrated from the studied amphiboles; ferromagnesian amphiboles (magesiohornblende and actinolitic hornblende) and calcic amphiboles (ferroan pargasite and silicic ferro-edenite) are rich in Al and more akin to those of podiform alpine type rather than those of stratiform type. In Alpine-type peridotites, Cr 3+ increases with increasing Fe 3+ , but Fe 3+ concentrations overall remain quite low (Lee 1999). …”

“…Lherzolite is one of the two main rock types of peridotites in the uppermost mantle, which is less depleted and less common than harzburgite appearing in ophiolites at slow-spreading ridges. Along the Earth's mid-ocean ridges, abyssal peridotites undergo hydration reactions and become serpentinized-especially in slow to ultraslow spreading mid-ocean ridges (Lee, 1999). Abyssal peridotites are characteristically highly altered, with 20%-100% serpentine replacing Tao Chen, Zhenmin Jin, Andy H. Shen and Wei Li 2 olivine and pyroxene (Dick, 1989).…”

“…The spinels have a large span in compositions, reflecting their primary magmatic origin and secondary alteration (Khalil and El-Makky, 2009;Lee, 1999;Kimball, 1990). The chemical formula of the spinel group minerals can be expressed by AB 2 O 4 , in which A represents divalent cations and B represents trivalent cations.…”
