Geostatistical modeling of topography using auxiliary maps

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThis paper recommends computational procedures for employing auxiliary maps, such as maps of drainage patterns, land cover and remote-sensing-based indices, directly in the geostatistical modeling of topography. The methodology is based on the regressionkriging technique, as implemented in the R package gstat. The computational procedures are illustrated using a case study in the south-west part of Serbia. Two point data sets were used for geostatistical modeling: (1) 2051 elevation points were … Show more

“…Semi-variogram analysis has also been applied successfully to topographic data in a number of ways. For example, to select an appropriate pixel size for DEMs interpolated from contour data [23], to compute the fractal dimension of a DEM [24], for interpolation using Kriging methods [25] and for investigating micro-scale surface structures [26]. In this paper, semi-variograms are used to explore the topographic structures represented by DEMs at different scales and to help characterize landscapes in terms of the topographic structures found in the data.…”

“…Tipicamente, um MNT é um mapa raster (uma imagem ou um conjunto de elevação) que, como muitos outros aspectos espaciais, pode ser eficientemente modelado usando-se geoestatística (Hengl et al, 2008).…”

“…To generate a spatially continuous model of shallow water depth (< 20 m) over the Lizard Island reef system ( Fig. 2), a combination of spatial interpolation and regression models known as Regression-Kriging (Hengl et al, 2008) was applied to WV2 wavebands 1 and 3.…”
