Objective: The aim of the current study is to investigate the chemical composition, cytotoxic effect, and leishmanicidal activity of propolis collected in the semi-arid region of Bahia, Brazil.Methods: EtOH extract, hexane, EtOAc and MeOH fractions from propolis were analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detector and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The identification was based on the exact mass, general fragmentation behaviors and UV absorption of the flavonoids. The in vitro cytotoxic effect and leishmanicidal activity of ethanolic extract, hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanolic fractions of propolis were evaluated.Results: Five triterpenes and twenty-four flavonoids were identified. The propolis did not present toxicity to the host cell up to the maximum concentration tested. In addition, all tested samples showed statistically significant activity against promastigotes of Leishmania chagasi and Leishmania amazonensis. Regarding the activity against amastigote forms of L. amazonensis, the hexane fraction, presented statistically significant activity with IC50 of 1.3 ± 0.1 μg/ml.Conclusion: The results support the idea that propolis can be used for future antileishmania studies.

Geopropolis collected by stingless bees is a product widely used in the semiarid Northeast region of Brazil. The wound healing activity, palynological analysis, free-radical scavenging activities, and the chemical composition of the hydroalcoholic extract of six samples from jandaíra geopropolis were determined. The wound healing activity was evaluated using 10% geopropolis hydroalcoholic extract added to the formulation incorporated into a base of Lannette cream, and the chemical composition of six samples was determinate by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array and quadrupole time-offlight mass spectrometry. The detected compounds in the five samples (1-5) were classified as flavonoid aglycones (flavonols, flavanonols, flavonones, flavones, and chalcones). In sample 6, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, and hydrolysable tannins were identified. Analysis of the pollen types in geopropolis showed that pollen from Leguminosae was predominant, indicating the visit of bees in the species of this family. This sample (6), with the highest content of phenolic compounds and high freescavenging activity, was tested to evaluate the wound healing potential. The topical application of geopropolis (10%) increased the wound healing rate and re-epithelialization of wounds in rats. Our data indicate that the mixture of phenolic components in the geopropolis may contribute to the activities of free-radical scavenging and wound healing.

Stingless bees, also known as meliponines, live in beehives. However, reports on the distribution of stingless bees are scattered, resulting in a lack of precision. Honey and propolis are the main components that can be harvested from their beehive, with a great commercial value of up to 610 million USD. Despite the enormous potential profits, discrepancies in their bioactivities have been observed worldwide, leading to a lack of confidence. Therefore, this review provided oversight on the potential of stingless bee products and highlighted the differences between stingless bees in Asia, Australia, Africa, and America. The bioactivity of stingless bee products is diverse and exhibits great potential as an antimicrobial agent or in various diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancers, and oral problems.
