“…We note that no high P-wave velocity anomaly is observed there (Replumaz et al, 2010;Richards et al, 2007). Further south, the slab beneath the Andaman Sea has a steep dip angle as revealed by previous seismic tomographic studies (Pesicek et al, 2010;Replumaz et al, 2010) and the spatial distribution of seismicity (Singha et al, 2019), which is similar to that observed beneath central Myanmar in this study. Recently, Mishra et al (2019) reported that the steeply subducting Indian slab beneath the Andaman Sea has penetrated through the 410-km discontinuity but terminates above the 660-km discontinuity based on their receiver function study.…”

“…1 ). The details of the passive OBS experiment in the Andaman region are discussed in Dewangan et al (2018) 36 and Singha et al (2019) 38 . In the present study, we considered the OBS data of 21st and 22nd March 2014, when an earthquake swarm occurred in the off Nicobar region.…”

“…The picked arrival times were used for locating the earthquakes using Hypocent v.3.2 program 40 and the minimum 1D velocity model established by Singha et al (2019) 38 . We estimated the location error ellipse using a covariance matrix, as defined in the Hypocent program.…”

“…The latest 1D velocity models derived using ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) data from the Andaman arc region also indicates a Moho at 30 km depth and a sharp increase in the dip of the subducting Indian plate from 26° in the Nicobar segment to 53°i n the Andaman segment, deciphered by mapping the intermediate-depth earthquakes (Singha et al, 2019). They also observed a seismic gap in the subducting Indian plate between 7.5° N and 9.5° N at depths greater than 100 km, which was attributed to partial subduction of the Ninetyeast ridge.…”
