Almost all human activities have contaminated or polluted vast soil tracts. Measuring the total metal concentration needs to provide more information on the bioavailability or toxicity of metals. Therefore, it has been established that the free metal ion concentration (or activity) is crucial in determining metal bioavailability and toxicity in most circumstances. The present study aimed to:1-evaluate the effects of prolonged use of three types of irrigated water (sewage effluent-, industrial effluent-and Nile-water) on some soil properties, 2-determine the active portion of Zn 2+ , and 3-identify the possible solid phases (minerals), which govern the solubility of Zn2+ in some soil in Sohag Governorate, using stability mineral diagrams. The results revealed that clay content increased by 3.38 %, 9.2 %, and 14.64%) in industrial -, sewage -, and Nile-irrigated soil, respectively, over their corresponding values in the last layer of their profiles. Organic matter increased by 10 %, 30.9 %, and 8.69 % in industrial-, sewage-and Nileirrigated soil, respectively. While CaCO3 content decreased by 5.21%, 19.78 %, and 12.85% in industrial-, sewage-and Nileirrigated soil, respectively. Soil acidity (pH) increased in industrial effluent irrigated soil by (9.65%), while it decreased by (6%) in both Nile-and sewage-effluent irrigated soil. Soil salinity increased in industrial and sewage effluent irrigated soil by 38.51% and 40.58%, respectively. However, the continual use of Nile water declined EC by 6.77% over their corresponding values in the last layer of their profiles. Moreover, the data also manifest that the continuous use of sewage effluent water in irrigation increased Zn content in soil by 877%, followed by industrial effluent irrigated water (525.3%), while in the Nile irrigated water soil, zinc content only increased by 1.42 %, over their corresponding values in the last layer of their profiles. The measured Zn2+ activities in the tested soils varied widely among the tested soil. It could be arranged to ascend as follows; in uncontaminated soil (Sohag) (5.24552 E-10 Ml) followed by industrial effluent irrigated soil (Gerga) ( 2.05739E-09 Ml) and sewage effluent irrigated soil (Kola) (4.20663E-09 Ml). It is clear from these results that the continual use of industrial effluent water or sewage effluent water in irrigation has led to an increase in Zn activity by about (3.9 and 8) times, respectively, higher than its value in Nile irrigated soil. The established Znstability diagrams indicated that the estimated free Zn-ion (Zn2+) activities for all the tested soils were governed by the solubility line of franklinite mineral in equilibrium with soil-Fe, especially Nile irrigated soil (super saturated), and with increasing Zn activity and we found that the values of Zn activity shifted up near to Willemite (Zn2SiO4) mineral in equilibrium with quartz (undersaturated). The study area is located in Upper Egypt as a part of the Sohag Governorate. In this study, the engineering geological properties for soil deposits of three new urban areas in the southwestern part of the Sohag Governorate are discussed and evaluated based on a field survey of soil boring, geotechnical experiment and petrographical examination. The studied area is covered by Quaternary and Pliocene deposits and composed mainly of gravely sand, silty sand, silty clay, clayey silt and rocks. Twenty-three sections, forty-two soil samples and three thin sections were studied. The depth of these samples ranges between land surface and up to 10 meters below underground. The geotechnical tests for the collected soil samples were performed to determine their physical, and mechanical characteristics (grain size distribution, specific gravity, and water content, bearing capacity, free swell and Atterberg limits). From the results, the grain size analysis proved that, the arenaceous sediments (average MZ=1.75Φ) falling in the medium sand grade. Mineralogical studies of X-ray diffraction examination of the collected samples reveal, the argillaceous deposits are composed mainly of montmorillonite, kaolinite and illite. The free swell test is ranging from 20 to 130% indicate that, some of the studied clay samples are high expansive. Thus, these soils are not suitable to direct foundation due to high swelling properties, which have a dangerous effect on the buildings. The liquid limit results range from 13 to 72%, the values of the plastic limit range from 9.8 to 32 % while the values of the shrinkage limit range from 9.3% to 25%. The values of the liquidity index range from 0.06 to -1.60. The liquidity index of studied samples is semi plastic or solid. The values of consistency index of the studied samples range from 0.65 (very stiff) to 2.59 (extremely stiff). The effective friction angle (Ф) ranges from 33.5° to 34.8°. The ultimate bearing capacity for different friction angles of the studied samples are ranging from 1312.2kN/m2 to 1533kN/m2. So, this type of soil is suitable for direct foundation.

Hydraulic performance of riverbank filtration: case study West Sohag, Egypt

Riverbank Filtration (RBF) Technology has been found to be a safe, renewable, sustainable, and cost-effective drinking water treatment or pretreatment technology. The Egyptian government has recently turned to riverbank filtration to conserve drinking and industrial water at a lower cost and higher efficiency. The study aims to assess the hydraulic performance of the riverbank filtration system in west Sohag, Egypt. MODFLOW and MODPATH 10.2.3 were used under the platform of Groundwater Modeling System (GMS) to construct a hydraulic groundwater flow model to simulate the flow of the riverbank filtration system. Six pumping rates with two scenarios were conducted to investigate the system's hydraulic performance. Water samples were collected from the Nile River, abstraction wells, and groundwater to characterize the water quality. The results indicated that the application of riverbank filtration is promising due to the significant hydraulic connection between the Nile and the aquifer. However, the system hydraulic aspects should be taken into consideration during the design phase as they may affect the RBF hydraulic performance and its efficiency. It became apparent how effective RBF is at eliminating pathogens and suspended solids. Infiltrated water, on the other hand, has higher iron and manganese amounts than the Nile water.
