“…Red shaded rectangle denotes rupture area of the 2007 Noto Hanto earthquake [after Awata et al, 2008], and stars denote mainshock epicenters. Onshore faults are based on data from the Research Group for Active Faults of Japan [1991], and offshore faults and folds are compiled from Katagawa et al [2005] and Okamura [2007]. Site localities: Na, Nagatejima; Ta, Takahama; Mo, Momoura; Ka, Kabutoiwa; Ha, Hatagoiwa; Am, Amamisaki; Ku, Kurasaki; Se, Sekinohana; Ak, Akakamizaki; Wa, Wajima.…”

“…As no other large earthquakes suitable for explaining the emergence event have been documented in this area, the low paleo-shoreline trace is considered to be associated with the 1892 earthquakes. Although a small number of minor faults near the epicenters of the 1892 events have been mapped onshore by the Research Group for Active Faults of Japan [1991], and offshore by Katagawa et al [2005] and Okamura [2007] (Figure 1), the source fault model of the 1892 earthquakes has yet to be specified. The present data therefore represent the first quantitative report of constraining the source area for this earthquake.…”

“…6. Comparison between surface traces of active faults revealed by a previous marine survey (Katagawa et al, 2005;Okamura, 2008) and the hypocenter distribution, which is a combined result by a temporal land seismic network and our results. Size of circles corresponds to magnitude, and focal depths are distinguished by a color code.…”

“…Upper: Distribution of epicenters of the aftershocks. Black lines named as F14, F15, F16 show active faults by Katagawa et al (2005), and pink line shows active faults by Okamura (2008). Open and solid black stars indicate epicenter of the mainshock and a largest aftershock in onshore region determined by Sakai et al (2008), respectively.…”
