“…Here as well, the fertility rates depend upon the relief, which is in line with the findings in Slovenia (Josipovič, 2003(Josipovič, , 2004, as long as a micro-region retains sufficient population (generally above 500 inhabitants; with 300 as a minimum). Accordingly, it should be stressed that the rural settlements and municipalities are under heavier pressure and more demographically endangered across both sides of the border region, precisely due to low number of population, and not due to ageing as might be expected and propagated.…”

“…The discrepancy between the total population change and the fertility rates on maps 3 and 4 is only partially unexpected. According to the research results from the three Slovenian cases (see Josipovič 2003;, we might expect the higher fertility rates in areas with "higher relief energy". In this way the relatively higher fertility rates in mountainous municipalities fit perfectly into the aforementioned paradigm.…”

“…Even though Serbia and Slovenia differ in socio-economic aspects, both countries are facing similar demographical issues, and just like many other Eastern European countries they are experiencing a postponement of marriage and childbearing to higher ages and decline of fertility towards very low levels (Josipovič 2003;Penev 2010;Nikitović 2015;Josipovič 2016;Graovac Matassi and Talan 2021). Marriage rates, which are still considered to be an important demographical reproduction factors (Devedžić 2004;Lerch 2017;Rašević and Vasić 2017), are greatly influenced by the composition of the marriage market.…”

“…The first is a result of changing lifestyle, and the second a result of improvements in quality of life and healthcare. This is also influenced by migration because of selectivity by age; that is, it is primarily young people that decide to move, which means that migration results in a younger population in areas that people move to and an older population in areas that people move from (Josipovič 2003;Javornik 2006).…”
