In the last decade, studies were conducted on the coastal line pollution in India by the scientists from our laboratory and also jointly with our collaborators in China, by collecting and analyzing the samples like, atmospheric air, mussels and coastal marine mammals (Ramu et al, 2007;Zhang et al, 2008;Kajiwara et al, 2006;Paromita et al, 2010) for the analysis of some classical and novel organohalogen compounds.…”

“…Recent status of organohalogen pollution in the marine mammal samples collected along the coastal length of India Kajiwara et al (2006) measured the levels of PBDEs, PCBs, DDTs, CHLs, HCHs and HCB in 56 marine mammal specimens archived in the Environmental Specimen Bank of Ehime University including 2 specimens of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins and 3 specimens of Spinner dolphins collected from the coastal regions of Bay of Bengal, and found that the PBDEs levels were the lowest in the blubber of the marine mammals from India than those from Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines. HCHs which were found to be the highest in the green mussel samples from the same area in Bay of Bengal (Ramu et al, 2007) were the lowest in the marine mammal specimens of the study by Kajiwara et al (2006) showing its lower bioavailability and/or the easy degradation in higher animals. DDTs were also lower in marine mammals from India than those from Hong Kong, a pattern similar to that observed in the case of mussels also.…”

“…The total concentrations of PBDEs ranged from 230 to 980 ng g − 1 lipid weight in the blubber of finless porpoises and from 280 to 6000 ng g − 1 lipid weight in the blubber of humpback dolphins. Recently, the geographical distribution of PBDEs in small cetaceans from Asian waters was reported based on samples collected from 1990 to 2001 and archived in the Environmental Specimen Bank for Global Monitoring (es-BANK) (Kajiwara et al, 2006a). The PBDE concentrations ranged from 6.0 to 6000 ng g − 1 lipid weight (Table 3).…”

“…Kajiwara et al (2006) investigated PBDEs in several small male cetaceans from Asian waters and reported concentrations between 0.006 mg/g lw in blubber of spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) from India (between 1990 and 1992) and 6 mg/g lw in Indo-Pacific 1985-1993 4-13 20 (13) 6.6 (3.6) Berggrena et al, 1999Kattegat-Skagerrak 1988-19903) 4.8 (2.5) Berggrena et al, 19991978-19815 19 (12) Berggrena et al, 1999Norway 1988-19908 5.6 (4.6) Berggrena et al, 1999United Kingdom 1999 4.4 (7.4) 2.2 (1.5) 2.9 (1.6) Law et al, 2006bSouthern North Sea 1999 harbour porpoises (n ¼ 3) from Japan. Despite the small sample size, these results are an order of magnitude lower than these for harbour porpoises from the present study.…”
