The mating call of Rana ridibunda varies considerably among populations throughout its geographical range of distribution. Multivariate analyses of nine call parameters demonstrate the existence of three distinct groups of populations which differ in the degree of temperature dependence of four parameters, and specifically in the number of pulses/pulse group and pulse groups/call. Since discriminant functions distinguish among these groups with very low rates of false classification and since the degree of differentiation between the groups is similar to that towards R. perezi, taxonomic consequences are indicated. The lake frog populations near the Caspian Sea (CIS) inhabit the terra typica restricta and, thus, represent R. ridibunda. The lake frogs of Armenia (CIS) and of Thrace (Greece) also belong to this species. The mating call of R. ridibunda consists of 19 pulses/pulse group and of 7 pulse groups/call on the average. The southwestern form, inhabiting Greece and southern Yugoslavia, is named R. balcanica sp. n. Its mating call is characterized by 29 pulses/pulse group and 4 pulse groups/call on the average. Finally, the southeastern form ranging from Turkey to Egypt is named R. levantina sp. n. In this species the number of pulses/pulse group averages 11 and that of pulse groups/call 10. According to the phylogenetic analysis of the character states using parsimony, we conclude that R. perezi and R. levantina are sibling species forming an outgroup to the European sibling species R. ridibunda and R. balcanica. Zusammenfassung Die Struktur des Paarungsrufes von Rana ridibunda weist beträchtliche Unterschiede zwischen verschiedenen Populationen des Verbreitungsgebietes auf. Nach multivariaten Analysen von neun Rufparametern lassen sich drei diskrete Gruppen von Populationen voneinander abgrenzen, die sich durch die Temperaturabhängigkeit von vier Merkmalen unterscheiden, besonders aber durch die Anzahl der Impulse/Impulsgruppe und die Anzahl der Impulsgruppen/Ruf. Da Diskriminanz‐Funktionen diese Gruppen mit geringen Quoten an Fehlklassifikationen trennen und der Grad der Differenzierung untereinander in der gleichen Größenordnung liegt wie gegenüber R. perezi, halten wir taxonomische Konsequenzen für notwendig und die Gliederung in drei Arten für richtig. Die Seefrosch‐Populationen am Kaspischen Meer (GUS) bewohnen die Terra typica restricta und repräsentieren daher R. ridibunda. Zu dieser Art gehören auch die Seefrösche in Armenien (USSR) und in Thrakien (Griechenland). Der Paarungsruf von R. ridibunda besteht im Mittel aus 19 Impulsen/Impulsgruppen und aus 7 Impulseruppen/Ruf. Die südwestliche Form bewohnt Griechenland und Süd‐Jugoslawien und wird als R. balcanica sp. n. benannt. Ihr Paarungsruf besteht aus durchschnittlich 29 Impulsen/Impulsgruppe und aus 4 Impulsgruppen/Ruf. Die südöstliche Form kommt in Israel, Ägypten und im Südwesten der Türkei vor und erhält den Namen R. levantina sp. n. We describe a new species of toad from the Great Basin region of northern Nevada belonging to the Bufo (Anaxyrus) boreas species complex. This cryptic species was detected through genetic analyses of toad populations sampled throughout the Great Basin and the morphological evidence was quantified through extensive sampling of live toads within the region. The new species has the smallest body size in the species complex, and can be further diagnosed from other species in the complex by its large tibial glands and unique coloration. The known distribution of the new species is restricted to an area less than 6 km2 in Dixie Valley, Churchill Co., Nevada. The Great Basin is an arid region where aquatic resources are both rare and widely scattered, making habitat suitable for anuran populations highly vulnerable to anthropogenic change. The habitat occupied by this newly described species is threatened by the incipient installation of geothermal and solar power development projects that require the water that defines its habitat.

Female frogs discriminate among potential mates based on individual variation in male advertisement calls. While considerable data have accumulated allowing comparisons of female preference functions among species, we still lack fundamental knowledge about how and why the shapes of preference functions for particular call properties vary among populations within all but a few species. Here, we report results from a study aimed at describing female preference functions for spectral call properties in Cope’s gray treefrog (Hyla chrysoscelis). Widespread throughout the eastern half of North America, Cope’s gray treefrog is the diploid member of the cryptic diploid-tetraploid Hyla versicolor species complex, and its populations are divided into two distinct genetic lineages (eastern and western). In this study of a western lineage population, we recorded and analyzed the spectral properties of 1000 advertisement calls from 50 males and conducted two-choice phonotaxis experiments to estimate a population-level preference function. Females preferred calls with average frequencies over calls with frequencies that were 2 or 3 semitones (1.4 or 2.1 standard deviations, respectively) lower than the population mean. We observed no behavioral discrimination between calls with average and higher-than-average frequencies. Preferences discriminating against low-frequency calls were weak and were abolished by attenuating the preferred average call by 3 dB. We discuss these results in light of previous studies of eastern lineage populations, geographic variation in female preference functions, and the potential adaptive value of discriminating against calls with low frequencies.
