Geographic mobility among older people and their adult children: The role of parents' health issues and family ties

Abstract: This research examines the relationship between older parents' health issues and (i) their relocations closer to their faraway adult children, (ii) their relocations into institutionalised care facilities, or (iii) having distant children move closer. Additionally, we investigate how these relocations are structured by children's gender and location. We focused on parents aged 80 years and older and their distant children. Multinomial logistic regression models were employed for older men and women based on da… Show more

“…And older adults with children living close by tend to change residence less often than those whose closest children live far away ( van der Pers et al, 2015 ). If an older parent has children but none live nearby, they are more likely to move closer to a distant child, into institutionalized care, or elsewhere rather than stay ( Artamonova et al, 2020 ). These moves elsewhere might include moves closer to siblings.…”

“…For example, in the U.S., young adults reported the greatest number of close friends they could confide in, with numbers consistently decreasing over age (Gillespie et al, 2015a). With age, family relations tend to gain in importance, as when midlife individuals and/or their aging parents relocate for the provision of the parents' later life care (Artamonova et al, 2020). In a U.S. longitudinal study, social support from adult children increased substantially between parents aged 57-60 and 69-72 (Silverstein et al, 2002).…”

“…Migration not only depends on economic opportunities and household dynamics but also on the broader family context, that is, the dispersion of family members who do not live in the household. Considerations about the support that is needed from parents in taking care of grandchildren (Kulu & Milewski, 2007 ) as well as considerations about the health problems of older parents play a considerable role in decisions about moving or staying (Artamonova et al, 2020 ; Silverstein, 1995 ). In both cases, decisions about moving and staying depend at least in part on where other family members live.…”
