International audienceThe Ili-Balkhash Basin in southeastern Kazakhstan is located at the junction of the actively deforming mountain ranges of western Junggar and the Tien Shan, and is therefore part of the southwestern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. The basement of the Ili-Balkhash area consists of an assemblage of mainly Precambrian microcontinental fragments, magmatic arcs and accretionary complexes. Eight magmatic basement samples (granitoids and tuffs) from the Ili-Balkhash area were dated with zircon U-Pb LA-ICP-MS and yield Carboniferous to late Permian (~ 350-260 Ma) crystallization ages. These ages are interpreted as reflecting the transition from subduction to (post-) collisional magmatism, related to the closure of the Junggar-Balkhash Ocean during the Carboniferous – early Permian and hence, to the final late Paleozoic accretion history of the ancestral Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Apatite fission track (AFT) dating of 14 basement samples (gneiss, granitoids and volcanic tuffs) mainly provides Cretaceous cooling ages. Thermal history modeling based on the AFT data reveals that several intracontinental tectonic reactivation episodes affected the studied basement during the late Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Late Mesozoic reactivation and associated basement exhumation is interpreted as distant effects of the Cimmerian collisions at the southern Eurasian margin and possibly of the Mongol-Okhotsk Orogeny in SE Siberia during the Jurassic – Cretaceous. Following tectonic stability during the Palaeogene, inherited basement structures were reactivated during the Neogene (constrained by Miocene AFT ages of ~ 17–10 Ma). This late Cenozoic reactivation is interpreted as the far-field response of the India-Eurasia collision and reflects the onset of modern mountain building and denudation in southeast Kazakhstan, which seems to be at least partially controlled by the inherited basement architecture

The amalgamation of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt in the southwestern Tian Shan in Tajikistan is represented by tectono‐magmatic‐metamorphic processes that accompanied late Paleozoic ocean closure and collision between the Karakum‐Tarim and Kazakh‐Kyrgyz terranes. Integrated U‐Pb geochronology, thermobarometry, pseudosection modeling, and Hf geochemistry constrain the timing and petro‐tectonic nature of these processes. The Gissar batholith and the Garm massif represent an eastward, along‐strike increase in paleodepth from upper‐batholith (~21–7 km) to arc‐root (~36–19 km) levels of the Andean–syn‐collisional Gissar arc, which developed from ~323–288 Ma in two stages: (i) Andean, I‐type granitoid magmatism from ~323–306 Ma due to northward subduction of the Gissar back‐arc ocean basin under the Gissar microcontinent, which was immediately followed by (ii) syn‐collisional, I‐S‐type granitoid magmatism in the Gissar batholith and the Garm massif from ~304–288 Ma due to northward subduction/underthrusting of Karakum marginal‐continental crust under the Gissar microcontinent. A rapid isotopic pull‐up from ~288–286 Ma signals the onset of juvenile, alkaline‐syenitic, post‐collisional magmatism by ~280 Ma, which was driven by delamination of the Gissar arclogite root and consequent convective asthenospheric upwelling. Whereas M–HT/LP prograde metamorphism in the Garm massif (650–750°C/6–7 kbar) from ~310–288 Ma was associated with subduction‐magma inundation and crustal thickening, HT/LP heating and decompression to peak‐metamorphic temperatures (~800–820°C/6–4 kbar) at ~288 ± 6 Ma was driven by the transmission of a post‐collisional, mantle‐derived heat wave through the Garm‐massif crust.

A Late Carboniferous volcano–sedimentary complex outcrops on the southwestern flank of the Bogda Mountains, NW China. The volcanic architecture, spatial relationships, and emplacement mechanisms of the lithofacies were studied in detail, providing a lithofacies context for previously published structural and geochemical studies and constraining the reconstruction of palaeo‐environments. Four distinct volcano–sedimentary facies are identified in the Qijiagou Formation: close‐packed pillow basalts, pillow basalts with interstitial sediments, hyaloclastites, and peperites. Textural features of the lithofacies, especially hyaloclastites and peperites, provide clear evidence for in situ fragmentation of lava flows, co‐volcanic sedimentation of limestone, and intimate interaction between lava, water, and sediments. They demonstrate autochthonous, subaqueous origin of the succession. Discovery of peperites and stratigraphic transitions of the related lithofacies indicate a progressively deepening subaqueous environment, resembling a volcanic evolution from early stage of eruption at a shallower level to increasingly subsiding basin with increasing eruption frequency of basaltic lava at greater water depth. Vesicularity of basalts, ambient pressure, and peperitic features indicate eruption depth at between 1,500 and 2,500 m. The deep extensional basin in the Baiyanggou area was coeval with bimodal volcanism, uplift, and granite intrusion along strike in the region, all indicating continental collision and post‐collisional extension. The substantial depth of the Baiyanggou Basin indicates that it may have been a back‐arc or even a residual oceanic basin.
