“…In light of recent proposed refinements to, for example, 40 Ar/ 39 Ar standard ages and decay constants (e.g., Renne et al, 1998Renne et al, , 2010Renne et al, , 2011Min et al, 2000;Spell and McDougall, 2003;Nomade et al, 2005;Kuiper et al, 2008;Ganerød et al, 2011), as well as refinements to other dating systems, for example, the U-Pb (e.g., Condon et al, 2010) and RbSr (e.g., Nebel et al, 2011) dating systems, and the newly proposed air Ar isotope compositions (Lee et al, 2006;Valkiers et al, 2010; this study), we ask whether it is time for the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) to convene a Commission on Geochronology? A review of the numerous developments that have been made since the last recommendation of a standard set of decay constants and isotope abundances in isotope geology, some 34 years ago (Steiger and Jäger, 1977), is surely overdue.…”
