Geochemical Properties and Pore Structure Control on Oil Extraction of Shale

Abstract: Despite geochemical properties and pore structures for shale oil extraction, the interplay among shale chemistry, pore network, and hydrocarbon movability still is an open question. Here, by using hybrid experimental methods, including backscatter scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, adsorption/desorption isotherm, and nuclear magnetic resonance, we provide a general characteristic of geochemistry and pore structures of Chang 7 (C7) shale in Ordos basin and figure out how these properties impact th… Show more

“…Pore networks in organic–inorganic components of organic-rich shales play an essential role in hydrocarbon storage. ,, Furthermore, the large molecular size of shale oil is not present in all of the shale matrix’s pores. , Thus, it is imperative to determine the main occurrence space of shale oil. ,,,, Previous studies have mostly concentrated on the pore structure of shale reservoirs. ,,, However, a few studies have focused on the physical state of shale oil, ,, leaving the relationship between the pore structure and fluid properties unclear. One of the crucial reasons is that the physical state of shale oil is complicated and is difficult to observe and describe directly.…”

“…Then, the porosity would decrease obviously during the diagenetic path [20]. The thickness and distribution of the source rock of the Upper Triassic reservoir in the basin are widely developed, makes its importance even more apparent [21,22]. However, much work has been undertaken to study the coupling relationship between oil emplacement and pore network evolution.…”
