“…This correlation suggests that Ti is contained mainly in phyllosilicates (Dabard, 1990;Condie et al, 1992). In contrast to the Wakino sediments, the TiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 correlations in the sediments from the Kenseki and Sasayama basin are poor, suggesting that TiO 2 may be concentrated in other minerals such as black mafic rock fragments and oxides (e.g., ilmenite, rutile, and sphene).…”

“…Sasayama sediments, zircon is more important than clay/mica in housing all REE whereas for the Wakino sediments clay and mica are more important than zircon in housing REE (Condie et al, 1992). A moderate positive correlation of Th with total REE for the Lower Cretaceous sediments may indicate allanite-monazite control on REE (Condie et al, 1992).…”

“…8) does not show clear dif fer ences be tween the spec trum of the TiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ra tios in the two sam ple suites. The mod er ate pos i tive cor re la tion be tween both abun dances of ox ides sug gests that Ti is in large part con tained in the phyllosilicates (Condie et al, 1992). The £RG show in gen eral a stron ger de ple tion in P 2 O 5 and MnO in com par i son to the KRG suite (Ap pen dix 2).…”

“…In general, the Ti content in the sediments is influenced by the composition of the source rock which contain Ti-bearing minerals (e.g., ilmenite and rutile) and the rate of chemical weathering, which is related to the dominant climate (Schroeder and Shiflet, 2000). The enrichment of titanium and aluminium and the strong positive correlation (r = 0.8) between the two elements could be attributed to the effect of chemical weathering and we suggest that Ti is contained mainly in phyllosilicates rather than Ti-bearing minerals (Condie et al, 1992). On the other hand, other major oxides were detected with relatively lower average concentrations compared to common shale composites and UCC.…”
