Genus Aotus Q- and G-Band Karyotypes and Natural Hybrids

Abstract: Q- and G-banding studies of Aotus trivirgatus trivirgatus and Aotus trivirgatus griseimembra are presented. After the analysis of 8 specimens, 2 A. t. trivirgatus and 6 A. t. griseimembra and the review of the literature on the field we state the existence of two different karyotypes, 2n = 54 and 2n = 50, for A.t.trivirgatus and three different karyotypes, 2n = 54, 2n = 52 and 2n = 50, for A. t. griseimembra. It was found that Robertsonian translocations were the mechanism involved in the numerical reduction o… Show more

“…It appears preferable to develop a numbering system in which each chromosome has a single designation based on length and arm ratio. The lengths recorded by Yunis et al (1977) and by us for each chromosome differ by less than 0.6 % of the complement, in all but one case.…”

“…Among Prosimians, hybrids between species or subspecies were most commonly described in lemurs (Rumpler and Dutrillaux, 1976;Ratomponirina et al, 1982), for example Eulemur albocollaris × Eulemur fulvus rufus and Eulemur f. fulvus × Eulemur m. macaco. In New World Monkeys interspecies hybrids both in the wild and in captivity have been documented in several genera, for example within genus Callithrix (reviewed by Coimbra-Filho et al, 1993), between squirrel monkey (sub-) species (Moore et al, 1990) and within genus Aotus (Yunis et al, 1977).…”
