“…By doing so, a more simple and clear structure of the information will be achieved, even though certain data has to be disregarded. This will lead to a much clearer representation of data into a lower representational space (Redfern, 2012). One can define the mass of a data point which represents the ratio between the data point total and the total sample size and the quality of a data point indicates how well the data point is represented by the graph.…”

“…One can define the mass of a data point which represents the ratio between the data point total and the total sample size and the quality of a data point indicates how well the data point is represented by the graph. The quality of the data points is connected to how well the extracted variables represent it and is characterized by a number which ranges from 0 (completely unrepresentative) to 1 (completely representative) (Redfern, 2012).…”

“…Hennig-Thurau et al (2001) refer to a genre as a film trait that consumers try to evaluate without having seen the movie. According to Redfern (2012), “Genres are relatively stable sets of cultural schemas […] that render individual films, and the elements within them, explicable to audiences (Neale, 2000)”. The consistency within a genre allows the viewers to be familiar with the rules determining a genre to infer motifs with regards to contents and structures, without having to watch the movie in advance.…”

“…Titles, casts, directors, genres, synopses and reviews are often presented. In light of their influence on movie consumption, research has extensively examined the role of stars and directors (Liu et al , 2013), genres (Redfern, 2012) and reviews (Moon et al , 2010). However, little research has investigated whether synopses have an impact on a movie’s box office performance.…”

“…In addition modern technological advances facilitate more complex productions in terms of visual and special effects as well as shooting locations and techniques. Trends over time in movie content (Redfern, 2012) could potentially be explained by technological advances, which favor pro tability of certain types over others (Ji & Waterman, 2010). However, this may also be translating into content complexity, by including more content categories.…”
