GenotypingChlamydia trachomatisstrains among men who have sex with men from a Northern Spain region: a cohort study

Abstract: ObjectivesTo determine the prevalence of anorectal Chlamydia trachomatis serovars in a group of men who have sex with men (MSM) with high risk sexual behaviour, attendees at a sexually transmitted infection (STI) unit from a region in Northwest Spain.DesignRetrospective and descriptive study of all swabs obtained from all MSM attendees at an STI unit, from 2007 to 2011. Retrospective ethical approval was granted by the Ethical Regional Committee of Clinical Investigation of the Principality of Asturias.Setting… Show more

“…The five C. trachomatis genotypes were identified to be genotype E (n = 20, 36.4 %) as the most prevalent, followed by G (n = 13, 23.6 %), H (n = 12, 21.8 %), D (n = 9, 16.4 %) and F (n = 1, 1.8 %) (Table 2 ). The predominance of genotype E is in line with previous studies on different patient groups (Taheri Beni et al 2010 , Ngandjio et al 2003 , Gallo Vaulet et al 2010 , Mejuto et al 2013 ). Genotypes E, F and D are known to be the most prevalent genotypes circulating in heterosexual populations worldwide (Lysen et al 2004 ; Taheri Beni et al 2010 ; Millman et al 2004 ; Ngandjio et al 2003 ; Gallo Vaulet et al 2010 ; Yang et al 2010 ).…”

“…trachomatis strains of the LGV genotype were found to be present in 25–53% of asymptomatic patients in Europe [ 27 , 28 ]. Rectal LGV infections offer multiple opportunities for genetic exchange with non-invasive urogenital strains such as G genotype, which is the most prominent genotype in rectal specimens in men who have sex with men (MSM) [ 11 , 29 ], whereas genotype E, which is the most prevalent variant in Spain [ 30 ] and other parts of the world [ 22 , 31 , 32 ] is frequently found in cervix of asymptomatic women.…”
