Genotoxicity studies with Cuman L in Drosophila melanogaster

Abstract: Cuman L, a dithiocarbamate fungicide, was tested for its ability to induce sex-linked recessive lethals (SLRLs) and II-III chromosome translocations in Drosophila melanogaster by the larval feeding method. The three concentrations of Cuman L, of 20, 40, and 60 microliters/100 ml, induced significant (P less than 0.01) increases in SLRLs but failed to induce any translocations.

“…Similarly Vargová et al (1980) could not show any mutagenic effect with the fungicide trymorphamide in Drosophila . However, Hemavathy and Krishnamurthy (1989) were successful in describing the mutagenic potential of Cuman-L, a dithiocarbamate fungicide. Interestingly, the fungicides captan and captafol are reported to cause somatic mutation in wing cells of D. melanogaster (Rahden-Staron, 2002).…”

“…Ziram was directly mutagenic in S. typhimurium (mainly in base substitution sensitive strains) [3 3,181 and in a repair test in Bacillus subtilis [8]. Samples of both technical ziram (as rubber chemical) and of a formulate containing ziram as the active ingredient were positive in the sex linked recessive lethals (SLRL) test and in somatic and germ-line mosaic assays in Drosophila [ 1 1,19,20]. In in vitro cultured mammalian cells, ziram (technical grade) induced high frequencies of chromosome aberrations (and no SCE) in Chinese hamster ovary cells both with and without S9 1211 and-tested only without S9-forward mutations at the tk locus in mouse lymphoma cells [22].…”
