“…The seasonal differences in the total PAH levels were not as pronounced as that for the inorganic compounds found in PM: the ranges were 10-24 and 9-16 ng/m 3 in cold-dry and in the warm-dry seasons, respectively. The average PAH concentration (18.9 ng/m 3 ) was comparable to the 0.3-51.9 ng/m 3 range reported for other regions, such as Santiago, Chile, and Flanders, Belgium [Arrieta et al, 2003;Du Four et al, 2004], but it was higher than the PAH levels reported for rural areas and for some of the US cities (ranging from 0-0.4 ng/m 3 ) [WHO, 2000]. High proportions of carcinogenic PAHs (53.3%-73.3%) were found for the PAHs detected in the PM organic extracts, and these PAHs may be partially responsible for the observed genotoxicity.…”

“…Also it remains possible that both intensive agriculture (pesticides, fertilizers) and some industrial activities at a distance of about 15 km were involved. In 2000–2001, episodes of air pollution with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and high mutagenic activity were observed in Peer ( Du Four et al 2004 ). These data and also the data from an ongoing Flemish biomonitoring program involving other rural areas ( Milieu en Gezondheid 2006 ) indicate that pollution is widespread in Flanders and suggest that exposure to pollutants may be quite homogeneous in some developed Western nations.…”

“…The environmental conditions during these periods were characterized by low temperatures and low relative humidity, which may lead to a higher molecular weight of the atmospheric pollutant. Similarly, studies report a higher mutagenic potential in colder months in European countries (Binkov a et al, 2003;Du Four et al, 2004;Piekarska et al, 2009Piekarska et al, , 2011, North and South America (Brown et al, 2006;Cavanagh et al, 2009) and New Zealand (T€ or€ ok et al, 1989;Müller et al, 2001).…”
