Genomics and Phenotypical Characterization of Two New Lytic Bacteriophages for Biocontrol of Salmonella enterica

Abstract: Aims: To perform the isolation, characterization and sequencing of the bacteriophages. To demonstrate that the bacteriophages can be used for biocontrol of different Salmonella enterica serovars. Study Design: This study was an experimental study. Place and Duration of Study: Bacteriology and Mycology Laboratory in the Veterinary Hospital at the Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine of the University of Passo Fundo (FAMV/UPF), Biotechnology Center (CBiotec) of the Federal University of Paraíb… Show more

“…As already known in the literature, phages are species-specific (Reardon, 2017b), but we stress that these same phages have demonstrated decent antimicrobial performance in previous studies against other serovars of Salmonella spp., such as S. Brandemburg, S. Anatum, S. Tennessee, S. Agona, S. Bredney, S. Schwarzemgrund, S. Infantil, S. Rissen, S. Lexington, S. Panama, S. Enteritidis, S. Typhimurium and S. Gallinarum (Pottker et al, 2020;Rizzo et al, 2020). These results indicated the phage action in a wide variety of serovars, possibly being specific for the Salmonella genus.…”
