“…In Pakistan, 200 samples from poultry chicken were obtained and analyzed for ESBL production. Results showed that 87% bacterial isolates were E. coli having blaOXA-48, blaNDM, blaCTXM and blaSHV2 as the most reported genes ( Ali et al, 2021 ) making it in line with our results.…”

“…The high prevalence of ST10 in our study was similar to that in a previous report ( Dadashi et al, 2022 ), however, it was different from a report that ST131 was the most common ST for extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) strains ( Manges et al, 2019 ). To date, E. coli ST10 has been shown to be a high-risk mcr -1-positive isolate from cattle farm environments ( Ali et al, 2021 ); its clonal spread with ∼50% fosfomycin resistance has been found among diarrheal calves in Xinjiang province, China ( He et al, 2021 ). It also has been isolated from poultry in Poland ( Ćwiek et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Interestingly, all these resistant isolates were harbouring plasmid-mediated gene, mcr-1 indicating its ability of fast dissemination and horizontal transfer. Previous reports from Pakistan have already detected the mcr-1 gene from clinical, cattle, wild birds, poultry and the environment (Ali et al, 2021;Bilal et al, 2021;Mohsin et al, 2017Mohsin et al, , 2019. On top of this, the co-occurrence of ESBL and colistin is limiting the option for treatment in near future presenting a huge challenge for healthcare community.…”

“…Nevertheless, prevailed practices indicate that a major share of antibiotics usage is aimed for disease prevention and as growth promoters in Pakistan. On top of this, the availability of antibiotics over the counter encourages its overuse and accumulating pool of MGEs in the environment (Ali et al, 2021;Mohsin et al, 2017Mohsin et al, , 2019Wang et al, 2020) that contribute to the emergence and dissemination of MDRs.…”
