Genomic Diversity of Two Hydrocarbon-Degrading and Plant Growth-Promoting Pseudomonas Species Isolated from the Oil Field of Bóbrka (Poland)

Abstract: Hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria are important resources for use in phytoremediation applications. Yet, for many hydrocarbonoclastic strains the genetic information regarding pollutant degradation and detoxification has not been thoroughly revealed. In this study, hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria were isolated from a long-term oil-polluted soil in Bóbrka, Poland. Pseudomonas spp. was the most dominant species. Of all 69 isolated strains tested in the laboratory using qualitative biochemical assays, 61% showed the … Show more

“…In order to enlarge the access to the diverse soil microorganisms, a sandwich diffusion system was applied [28]. In brief, roots with tightly-adhering soil attached (rhizosphere) were suspended in 5 mL of 0.1 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, pH = 7.0) and incubated on an orbital shaker (160 rpm).…”

“…Proton-transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-TOF-MS) represents a useful and innovative solution in the monitoring of VOC emissions. The technique has been successfully applied to environmental research such as measurement of ecosystem VOC fluxes by coupling the instrument to a flux tower [ 27 ], to plant VOC emissions by coupling it to a leaf chamber [ 28 ], and to air pollution cleaning potential of bacteria by measuring the headspace of the cultures [ 29 ]. Other applications include the measurement of VOCs that characterize food flavor [ 30 ], indoor air quality studies [ 31 ], and breath analysis in medical research [ 32 ].…”

“…In contrast, a series of studies discuss the hydrocarbon degradation ability (including both aliphatic-and aromatic) of P. extremaustralis/P. veronii lineage affiliating bacteria (Tribelli et al 2012(Tribelli et al , 2018Imperato et al 2019;Morales et al 2016;Wald et al 2015). P. extremaustralis 14-3 T was isolated, for the first time, from an Antarctic environment and was able to tolerate and degrade hydrocarbons.…”
