Genomic Characterization and Probiotic Potency of Bacillus sp. DU-106, a Highly Effective Producer of L-Lactic Acid Isolated From Fermented Yogurt

Abstract: Bacillus sp. DU-106, a newly isolated member of Bacillus cereus group, exhibits the predominant ability to produce L-lactic acid. The probiotic potency of test strain revealed its survivability at acidic pH, bile salts and viability in simulated gastric juice in vitro. The acute oral toxicity test indicated its no toxicity to laboratory mice in vivo. We further determined the complete genome of strain DU-106 to understand genetic basis as a potential probiotic. It has a circular chromosome and three plasmids f… Show more

“…According to the results, these products are an obstacle to adequate nutrition because of their high sugar content. In yogurt, which is usually considered a healthy food due to its probiotic properties [22], more than half of products in this category presented an excess of sugar content. Many of the processed products, generally those of lower nutritional quality are available at lower prices ($0.81 on average), making them physically and economically accessible, as well as attractive for their advertising and for being of recognized brands; these factors greatly influence the consumer's decision [23].…”

“…A hundred microliter of diluted samples was poured onto an MRS agar for LAB, onto a potato dextrose agar (Himedia, India) for fungi; onto an Actinomycetes Isolation Agar (Himedia, Mumbai, India) for actinomycetes. The lactic acid content of the silage was assayed by the HPLC method [28].…”

“…Furthermore, Al-Madboly et al [19] investigated that the probiotic activity of Aloe vera in in vitro fermentation with L. fermentum isolates provided acetic, propionic and lactic acid. Li et al [20] investigated that Bacillus spp. DU-106, a newly isolated member of B. cereus group, exhibits the predominant ability to produce L-lactic acid.…”
