Genome-Wide Association Mapping of Seedling Vigor and Regrowth Vigor in Winter Wheat

Abstract: Seedling vigor and regrowth ability are important traits for the forage production of winter wheat. The objectives of this study were to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with seedling vigor and regrowth vigor traits using a genome-wide association mapping study (GWAS). Seedling vigor and regrowth vigor were evaluated with shoot length, the number of shoots per plant and shoot dry weight per plant 45 days after planting and 15 days after cutting. A large phenotypic variation was observed for all the… Show more

“…Recent studies reported several QTLs under drought conditions during post-flowering ( Li et al., 2015 ; Sukumaran et al., 2018 ), while fewer efforts were documented for early crop stages under stress conditions ( Maulana et al., 2020 ; Sallam et al., 2022 ). QTNs (quantitative trait nucleotides) or MTAs (marker-trait associations) related to coleoptile length on several chromosomes ( Rebetzke et al., 2014 ; Ma et al., 2020 ), shoot length on 1A, 2B, 3A, 4B, 5A, 7A ( Maulana et al., 2020 ; Maulana et al., 2021 ), root length on 2B, 2D, 3B, 4A, 4B, 5D, 5B and 6D ( Kadam et al., 2012 ; Maccaferri et al., 2016 ; Ayalew et al., 2019; Xu et al., 2021 ) were documented previously. Moreover, Thabet et al.…”

“…The literature reported the importance of this gene in influencing floral organ differentiation, cell wall biogenesis and degradation, and spike differentiation ( Zhu et al., 2016 ). A BLAST search revealed an association with a candidate gene, aminopeptidase M1-B , involved in plant developmental processes such as embryonic, vegetative, and reproductive development in agreement with Maulana et al. (2021) in wheat.…”

“…Most of these studies were conducted at reproductive stages. However, the number of studies identifying MTAs for seedling drought stress tolerance are scarce ( Ayalew et al., 2017 ; Ma et al., 2020 ; Maulana et al., 2020 , Maulana et al., 2021 ; Ahmed et al., 2022 ; Schierenbeck et al., 2023 ). Therefore, in the present study, we carried GWAS using 12,511 SNPs and identified 39 MTAs associated with seedling characteristics under controlled and drought stress.…”

“…Since wheat seedlings are crucial in determining plant stand and grain yield, researchers are now prioritizing their studies at seedling stage. For instance, multiple GWAS studies identified the significant MTAs associated with germination percentage (GP), shoot length (SL) ( Maulana et al., 2020 ), root length (RL) ( Ayalew et al., 2017 ), coleoptile length (CL) ( Ma et al., 2020 ), seedling vigour (SV) ( Maulana et al., 2021 ), and drought tolerance index (DTI) ( Schierenbeck et al., 2023 ) under drought stress. These studies identified the candidate genomic regions associated with seedling drought stress tolerance.…”
