Genital Human Papillomavirus Infection among Male and Female Sex Partners: Prevalence and Type-Specific Concordance

Abstract: Penile, cervical, and vulvovaginal samples from 50 couples attending a sexually transmitted disease clinic and perianal samples from women only were tested for human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA by dot filter hybridization (DFH) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Only 18% of women and 4% of men were HPV-positive by DFH, but 72% of women and 63% of men were HPV-positive by PCR. HPV type-specific concordance between partners was more common than predicted by chance (P = .01) and was associated with detection of HP… Show more

“…A relatively poor correlation in HPV-positivity has also been reported in previous studies of women and their male sexual partners (Hippelaïnen et al, 1993c; Kyo et al, 1994;Baken et al, 1995;Strand et al, 1995;Castellsagué et al, 1997). The low agreement in our study may be partly due to technical reasons, since a relatively small amount of penile exfoliated cells could be obtained and fewer HPV types could be specifically identified in husbands than wives.…”

“…A limited number of cross-sectional and case-control studies have evaluated genotype-specifi c HPV concordance in male-female couples (3)(4)(5)(6)(7). There are, however, no empirical data on the heterosexual transmission of HPV.…”
