Abstract: Large studies of genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in men are few and mainly include high-risk groups. We interviewed 779 men who requested a vasectomy in 27 public clinics in 14 states of Mexico. Exfoliated cells were obtained from the scrotum, the shaft of the penis, the top of the penis including the coronal sulcus, the glans and the opening of the meatus. HPV testing was performed using biotinylated L1 consensus primers and reverse line blot. Unconditional logistic regression was used to estimat… Show more

“…The protective effect may be limited as the effect of circumcision could be limited to certain sites of the penis; similarly, the protective effect of the condom would be associated with HPV in the sites covered by the condom (27). In our study we cannot differentiate among sites because samples taken from the scrotum and penis shaft, balano-preputial groove, and urinary meatus were combined.…”

“…Due to variability of published male HPV prevalence estimates, model outcomes for male HPV prevalence were not calibrated to age-specific data, however, the relative difference between genders in overall HPV prevalence was constrained for calibration to be ≤ 40%, based on evidence that prevalence is quite similar between genders. [38][39][40][41] For each HPV type or group of types considered, the best fit model parameters were used to evaluate population-level impact of the following vaccination scenarios:…”

“…Most studies that have evaluated the association between circumcision and HPV prevalence found a lower prevalence in circumcised men [6,7,[11][12][13][14]16].…”
